Senior Team in Final
On Thursday afternoons I have been
going climbing at Herts Young Mariners Base
for my games afternoon. I chose climbing as I
have done a little bit before and enjoyed it, so
when given the opportunity I wanted to do
some more. I also wanted to have extra
practice to improve.
I have learnt how to fit harnesses
and the rest of the group and I were climbing
fairly easy walls. We learnt how to get down
by using the harness knot, leaning back and
walking down.
There is also a wall with a chimney,
where you have to climb up in the chimney
and then climb out of it.
We are now climbing higher walls
and I am really looking forward to carrying on
with this during the forthcoming weeks.

Fitness tests
Throughout the netball season the
senior team played numerous fixtures and all
team members displayed excellent practical skills.
Their effort, competitiveness and commitment
resulted in win after win; reaching the finals in
both the league and the end of season
tournament. Unfortunately they lost the
championship to Highlands School.
Nicole Couzens, captain of the senior
team showed exceptional talent and together the
girls have worked well as a team and the
individual members showed progression within
their position.
It is a shame to see the season over and
some of the girls moving on to higher education
in different areas. I hope all the girls continue to
improve and play netball with the same spirit they
did this year at St John’s.

Bad weather conditions hampered the Inter-house competition which resulted in the
boys activities switching from football to basketball, whilst the girls continued with netball. Each
house competed in 6 minute matches. The matches were played in good spirit and were highly
competitive. 3 points were awarded to the winners, 2 points for a draw and 1 point to losing team.

Carbohydrates
The main purpose
of carbohydrates is
to give us energy
for our bodies to
move and take part
in sports.
Carbohydrate is
broken down into
glucose and carried
around the body in
the bloodstream.
This glucose is
transported in the
blood to the work-
ing muscles and
used to make the
muscles produce
movement.
Any carbohydrates
that are eaten and
not used are stored
in the muscle and
liver as glycogen.
Once the muscle
and liver stores of
glycogen are full,
excess carbohy-
drate is turned into
fat and stored in fat
cells.
There are two
main types of car-
bohydrates;
Sugars—sweets, jam, bis-
cuits, fizzy drinks (these
give a quick burst of ener-
gy)
Starches—bread, pasta,
rice, potatoes and cereal
(these give the body a slow
and prolonged supply of
energy)
Well done
to all pupils who
took part!

Every Friday during last term,
hockey took place at local astro turf pitch-
es. Despite bad weather conditions, the
5th and 6th form boys were still very keen
to play. Many of the boys were quite new
to hockey; they have been learning various
skills including, dribbling, passing, controlling
the ball, tackling and shooting.
After the warm up and skills prac-
tise each week, the boys have been playing competitive mini games, where they have
also been learning the rules of the game.

Also last term there was
lunchtime girls’ hockey training. This in-
cluded some first form girls who are also
beginners to hockey.
The girls were invited to Bishop
Stopford School to take part in an indoor
hockey coaching session and to play some
competitive games, in mixed teams with
pupils from Bishop Stopford School. The
girls played really well and are looking forward to continuing training next season
along with playing a few competitive
matches against other schools.

Trampolining
Fitness Tests 1st, 2nd and 3rd forms
have been participating
in health and fitness
activities in their
individual lessons since
Christmas. Amongst a
variety of fitness tests,
pupils have carried out
the multistage fitness
test (bleep test). This
is a very common test
for aerobic fitness.
All pupils worked very
hard during the test,
but the PE staff would
like to say a special
well done to the
following pupils who
achieved a very good
level compared to the
national average
scores.

Various 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th form
pupils selected to participate in trampolining
during their games afternoon. Pupils have
been learning various trampolining skills and
progressions associated with these for the
basic moves, seat drops, front drops and back
drops. Pupils have also been practising linking
moves together to form routines.
During trampolining lessons pupils
have also learnt about the health and safety implications regarding the use of trampolines
and have started to take on the role of coach-
ing and peer assessing to further improve indi-
vidual techniques.
