How many of you…
…are on Facebook with a personal profile (for yourself, friends, family)?
…have your organization on Facebook?
…are on Twitter with a personal account? …Twitter for your organization?
FB growth
July 2010: 500 million July 2011: 750 million
+100 Million accounts from 2010 to 2011
= ~175-225 million
On average: 460,000 new accounts per day
The Other…
Orkut 100m
MySpace 100m
LinkedIn 80m
Hi5 80m
Flickr 32m
LiveJournal 17m
New kid on the block…
Huddle: free 10 way video conferencing
What’s new since last year?
1. Profile 2. Page 3. Group
The Facebook Page. Some things are a little different…
Page creation & categories
Before: 3 Now: 6
Now: you can change the category (click Edit Page > Basic Info) at any time.
A little different… The “About” box
“About” box disappeared… then reappeared.
No longer uses http:// for a link to be clickable - just www.
A little different Profile Picture Size
Profile picture size reduced from 200 pixels wide by 600 pixels high to -> 180x540
Thumbnail is the same (90x90)
A little different… Location of Friends who Like a Page
“### Friends like this” moves to upper right from lower left.
(You only see this on Pages you do not Admin.)
And some things are VERY different… Page Notifications!
On a Page you do admin…
Page activity
now appearon the Page…
And are emailed to you… if you check the box at Edit Page > Your Settings
VERY different Wall Filter
If you allow fans to post on your wall…
A visitor who has not “recently” visited your Page will see “Top Posts” as default. They can always select “Top Posts” or “Most Recent”.
VERY different Wall Filter Admin choices
Wall Tab Shows:
All Posts = posts by you and your fans. (“Top Posts” to new visitors, then “Most Recent.”)
Only Posts by Page = shows most recent by Page. Visitors can click on “Most Recent” link to see posts by fans too (if you allow visitors to post content).
VERY different Wall Tabs location
Moved to the left side
8 tabs show before the “more” link
How to hide a tab:
1. Click “edit” (or “more” if you have more than 8) located under your tabs;
2. You will now see an “x” next to each tab. Click on the “x” to hide any you don’t want to show up in the top 8.
How to rearrange your tabs:
1. Click “more” and/or “edit”2. Hover over the tab you want to move3. Drag tab to desired location
VERY different Featured likes & Page owners
You can display up to five Pages in rotation as “Featured Likes” on the lower left:
Edit Page > Featured > Edit Featured Likes
(You need to have added the pages by clicking “Add to My Page’s Favorites” on each Page first)
You can also edit Featured
Page Owners (Admins)
VERY different Photo Strip Displays the five
most recent photos you (the Page) have uploaded to an album or your wall.
Random order. Thumbnail displayed. Click tiny x in upper
right of any photo to “hide” it.
If you have advanced photo editing skills: there is a link in your handout to a video showing you how to make thumbnails that will show up exactly how you want to make an “advert”(isement)… but photos of pets work!
Get in the habit of checking your photo strip after you upload new photos!
VERY different Use Facebook as Page
Advantages: 1. You can create an event on your
Page and then comment on the event as the Page.
2. You can see and comment on other Pages as the Page.
3. Your newsfeed is only Pages you’ve “liked” as that Page or added to that Page’s Favorites
4. Notifications are for Page. This is VERY valuable for Admins, who no longer have to scan their Page Walls looking for the comments and questions from Fans, especially if they don’t have email notifications turned on.
You can’t... Invite your personal friends to an
event as the Page. View or comment on walls or
content of friends or fans. See Groups. Use Facebook’s messages.
You can… Easily switch back and forth.

Profile to Page conversion tool
March 31, 2011 - Facebook released a new tool to convert a personal profile into a Page.https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?migrate
Try using Facebook as your Page first BEFORE converting. You cannot view profiles or content owned by other people. Nor message people.
Only your profile photo and friends are moved.
Download any content (wall posts, photos, videos, friend list, notes, events, sent & received messages, any comments) you want to save, as they will ALL be deleted - so any comments you’ve made on other people’s photos, wall etc will disappear: https://www.facebook.com/help/page=18830
You will be removed as admin from any Groups (add your profile as a group admin BEFORE converting).
You may loose your vanity URL -- but you may be able to get it back in 1-2 weeks. Keep trying facebook.com/username daily - or hourly! If that doesn’t work, try contacting Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=username_infringement
And… You can’t convert (move) your friends to an existing Page, only to a new one.
New Facebook Apps
Tabs add functionality to your Page
Easy new tool Landing Page tool

Facebook Fundraising Success Story: Soi Dog http://jonathongrapsas.blogspot.

aka tinyurl.com/629wcno
has recruited hundreds of regular, monthly donors directly from Facebook
Yes you read that correctly, recruited monthly donors from facebook. An organization that generates around $300,000 AUD a year has managed to find more than 500 ongoing, monthly supporters (giving $20 a month) in the last year. That's over $100,000 a year (over one third of their income) coming from facebook recruits.
The call to action in their ADS: the most shocking photos allowed (Monday morning)

So what about Facebook Groups?
They appear in the left navigation of people’s “Home” page with number of new items (#)
People can opt in or out to get emailed notifications or Facebook notifications of posts by members, friends, or by subscription
Works well for small communities and inter-community communication
Allows for privacy - group can be “closed” or “secret” Group Admins are visible and post as themselves You can add your friends to groups Creating an event from within a group AUTOMATICALLY invites
all members of that group Group chat, group docs
