DESCRIPTION
The origin of Abayima's solutions for communicating during wide-scale disaster, when communication networks are severed. OpenSIMKit was a solution developed in Uganda when authorities were rumored to have launched a surveillance network to filter text messages critical of the ruling government. My team and I developed a solution that was discrete, could be used offline, and that worked on feature phones. We later realized that the tech was applicable to other markets, particularly the countries in North Africa where civilians were under threat by oppresive governments who were shutting now telecommunication networks to silence them. The development of OpenSIMKit was supported by a $150,000 grant from the Knight Foundation who hosted this presentation at their Philadelphia igKnight event.
