SESAR JU– Initial 4D “On time !”

Initial 4D Operation

Once the A/C enters the ATC arrival horizon, at least 40' before landing:

1. ATC uplinks to A/C the route clearance to follow down to runway - (via CPDLC).

2. Crew loads the route clearance into the FMS and updates FMS winds and temperatures data (via

AOC datalink function) A/C downlink of 4D predicted trajectory (ADS-C)

SESAR – Initial 4D On time ! Amsterdam 6 March 2012

AOC datalink function). A/C downlink of 4D predicted trajectory (ADS-C).

3. ATC requests Reliable RTA interval for merge point (via ADS-C). A/C downlinks Reliable RTA

interval (via ADS-C).

4. ATC uplinks feasible RTA.

5. Crew inserts RTA in FMS as active data. A/C downlinks A/C 4D predicted trajectory (via ADS-C).

6. 4D trajectory agreed by crew and ATC Descent can be flown in full managed.

Main observations

• RTA• All 6 RTAs were met within the required 10 seconds.

SESAR – Initial 4D On time ! Amsterdam 6 March 2012

• CPDLC• Uplinked routes and time constraints processed correctly.

• ADS-C• Provision of airborne data (trajectory predictions and ETA

window) to the ground worked all ok.• Worth noting that for the first time, ADSC was routed via

ATN i t d f ACARS

© AIRBUS Operations S.A.S. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary document.

ATN instead of ACARS

• Weather• Meteo updates consistently processed by crew.

Page 13

Expected benefits

• Thanks to management through RTA, CTOT could be discarded

• Less delays on ground• More flexibility for airlines

• Better management of the arrivals• No more holdings• Less fuel burn• Less delays• Possibility to fly close-to-CDA descents

Conclusions

• The I4D flight contributed to demonstrate the technical and operational feasibility of the concept byand operational feasibility of the concept by

• Maturing the technical definition and the system design• Providing a first exposure to operational community

• The I4D flight is the result of a successful enhanced collaborative work (ground industry, airborne industry, ANSPs)
