In March 2016, Keolis signed a preferential partnership with NAVYA, a Lyon-based company specialising in autonomous

vehicles. NAVYA develops automated, electric, driverless shuttles that don’t require any specific infrastructure. The company is a leader in this complex technology, which combines software, automotive manufacturing, and advanced perception, navigation, and geolocalisation techniques. NAVYA enjoys a significant technological advantage in the field, thanks to extensive experience and a highly qualified R&D team.

Keolis, in partnership with NAVYA, and backed by SYTRAL (Public Transport Authority) and the Métropole de Lyon, has been operating an industry first in Lyon’s eco-district of Confluence since september 2016: autonomous electric shuttles are now providing regular passenger transport services on a 1,350-metre stretch of public road.

Until recently, just two tram stops 900m apart served the city side of the Confluence eco-district,

a neighbourhood where companies such as GL Events and Euronews have set up global headquarters.

Today, two free NAVYA ARMA shuttles circulate on the banks of the river Saône, providing easy access to businesses, as well as dining, entertainment, and shopping zones. Designed with intermodality in mind, the shuttle service is situated just a few metres from the tram stop. An operator will be present on each shuttle during the one-year trial phase, with a transition to a fully autonomous service planned for the end of this period.

This innovative and sustainable mobility solution is coherent with the founding spirit of the Confluence district. The area is recognised as an eco-district by the French government, and as a sustainable neighbourhood by the WWF. It has also been awarded the Concerto European label for the low energy consumption of its buildings.
