DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT VARIABLES

Scientists use an experiment to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to change in a predictable way.

These changing qualities are called variables. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: Independent, dependent and controlled.

DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT VARIABLES

Scientists focus their observations on the dependent variables to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. The change of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable.Controlled variables are factors that a scientist want to remain constant (the same). They are used to compare the depended variable’s changes in the experiment and keep the tests fair.

Experiment #1•Click and Drag Seed Variety BT 123 into both containers•In the left container allow no ECB•In the right container infest it with LOW ECB•Grow the Corn (140 days)•Click and drag each ear on each plant to the weighing dish.•Drag the weighing dish on to the balance. Read and record the mass on the data table.•Calculate the average for each infestation level.•Reset Experiment Chambers when done.

Add all three together.Divide by 3 for average.
