Introduction

The class data were collected from 7 sections; 2 sections from this semester and 5 sections from

previous semesters. The data include males and females enrolled in CE 192. The purpose of the project

is to analyze the data using statistical and probabilistic methods.

The following statistical analysis was conducted on the ungrouped data: mean median, range,

variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and 1st, 2

nd, and 3

rd quartiles. The ungrouped data

was also analyzed with graphical analysis including dot plots, single and double stem-leaf plots, box

plot, and 3-point polygon plot. Moreover, the ungrouped data were analyzed with Venn diagrams by

confirming and solving 12 events for males and females, probabilities and conditional probabilities,

checking for independence, and Bayes’ Rule diagram.

The grouped data were analyzed as a range of heights instead of using individual heights. The

Statistical analysis of the grouped data includes average, median, 1st and 3

rd quartiles. The grouped data

were also analyzed graphically with a histogram. The appendix includes the row data sheets used for the

project.

Conclusion

The result of the statistical and probabilistic analysis of the height of students enrolled in CE 192

from current and previous semesters are shown above. The methods used to analyze the data proved to

be very useful because they allowed the data to be presented in a visual manner. For instance, the dot

plots, box plots, and histogram visually portray the spread of the data of male, female, and combined

class heights. Stem-leaf plots are also useful because you can easily see the spread of the data as well as

derive the data points very quickly.

The following results were obtained using ungrouped data: the number of male only heights was

89 while the number of female only heights was 15, and the number of heights common to both males

and females was 104. These results show that the majority of students of CE 192 are males. It also

shows that male and female heights are related since a number of heights common to males and females

was the largest. Moreover, the probability of selecting a height of a male student was .928 and the

probability of selecting the height of a female was .572

The statistical and probabilistic methods proved to be very useful in analyzing the heights of

students currently and previously enrolled in CE 192. These methods can be applied to the various data

in the engineering field. Mastering the methods shown in this project will facilitate the engineer to make

well-educated decision in his or her career.
