• Founded in Ghent, Belgium, October 21, 2009 (with 28 members), evolved out of the European DRIVER Project (EC, FP7)

• Currently more than 100 member institutions (from 35 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Northern and Latin-America)

• We are a very light weight organization (equivalant to 1.5 fulltime employees)

• Membership is very diverse:• Universities/libraries• Federations/associations• Research institutions• Governmental organisations, research funders• Technology/Infrastructure development• Service providers• Intergovernmental organisations

COAR’s Principles• Global: COAR focuses on the needs and issue of interest of

repositories across the world• Sensitive to local differences: COAR recognizes of the

diversity of repositories globally• Strategic: Bringing together policy makers and regional

networks to work for a future vision of repositories• Grass roots: COAR’s activities are driven by the active

engagement of its members and based on their interest and priorities

• Synergistic: COAR support the adoption of common approaches to policies, metadata schemas, vocabularies, etc.
