Course Description and Overall Goal
We know that a sound knowledge of statistical techniques is necessary for the study of modern business and economics; this
course will provide a basic introduction to statistical methods for policy analysts. The course will provide an introductory foundation
in statistical inference, enabling the student to become a competent producer of basic statistical research. In addition the skills
acquired will enable the student to become a somewhat more sophisticated consumer of more advanced research methodologies.
The emphasis is on practical applications and real-world problem solving. Areas covered include: descriptive statistics, probability,
inferential statistics, regression and correlation, and the use of a statistical software package.
Learning Objectives
The objective of the course is to make the students familiar with some basic statistical and linear programming techniques. The
main focus, however, is in their applications in business decision-making.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
To understand the benefits of Quantitative Methods. to understand what the data is telling us
To take decision based on central tendencies .To understand the distribution of data with pictures and equations..To understand the Probability Experiments and able to take decision logically and rationally with the help of probability.
To use statistical software, such as Microsoft® Excel, to solve business and economic problems
Know various statistical topics, such as frequency distribution, elementary probability theory including discrete and
continuous probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis.
To understand the concept of using a sample statistic to estimate a population parameter. Criteria for choosing a
good method.
This course provides students with the insight into the services, pricing, techniques, goals and objectives, management
styles, internal problems and risks of financial institutions, and the markets in which they operate. The course
accomplishes this insight by (i) profiling the financial, operating, and organizational characteristics of each type of
financial institution, and (ii) examining the services offered by these firms to the public.
Learning Methodology
The class will consist of a combination of case discussions, class discussions, student’s presentations and lectures. Student’s
preparation of assigned material and involvement in class discussion is essential for the success of the course and class
participation will count towards the final grade. Generally a student centered learning methodology will be used. The specific
activities will involve:
Class discussion on the theoretical aspects of the subject and related the concept in real life situations
Solving numerical questions
Daily quiz on the topic covered in the last session.

Class Participation
Students are expected to attend all classes regularly. A student’s absence does not relieve him or her of meeting all course
requirements. We are engaged in a learning community, one where we strive for an open exchange of ideas. Each of us has
responsibility in the exchange. Individual contributions will be assessed by the instructor and appropriate score will be taken
towards internal assessment.
Student’s Preparation
Students are required to prepare well before attending the classes. You should read the cases mentioned in the course outline
and / or cases announced before the session. You should read at least one of the text books mentioned in the prior readings
section of the course outline.
Total Time Duration
The course is scheduled for 38 sessions of 50 minutes each.
