This starter will take longer than most. It has several sections that involve both math and writing.
You may need your teacher’s help at some point, so don’t be afraid to raise your hand and ask for
assistance. Try to be as polite and nice as you can!
An airplane took off from Cyprus, which is at sea level, and climbed to 20,000 feet. It landed in Addis
Ababa, which is located in the mountains of Ethiopia at an altitude of 7,900 feet. How much
altitude did the plan lose when it landed?
To work on this problem, think back to the first two starters we did that talked about balloons rising and falling. In paragraph form, write out in your journal how you would work this problem. Then write the
math problem and solve for the answer.
When you finish this project, open Google Earth on your computer and go to both Cyprus and Addis
Ababa to see where they are on the map.
In your notebook, write a paragraph describing what it would feel like landing at Addis Ababa. Would
you be scared? Nervous? Excited? See if you can use a metaphor or simile in your paragraph to help
the reader visualize your feelings.
If you finish this project early, go back to Google Earth and type in some place you have been on vacation or would like to go on vacation. Do this
just for fun!
