DESCRIPTION

The mayor and I were keynote presenters at a rural development conference in Pierre, SD. We discussed the economic turnaround in Independence and used individual projects to explore how and why it happened.

There wasnt much to celebrate.The mills were closed -with no apparent plan for change.Hops farming had long before ended.On Main Street, storefronts were boarded up - with no sign that this would change. 6. But this was Independence

  • Four new restaurants opened downtown in the last year and a half.
  • Downtown is alive after 5
  • More people downtown = more customers
  • New business owners bring new energy
  • Medallion Cabinetry Started with 60 employees,expanded to 400 and wants to expand again.
  • Boise Cascade Mill closed. Lost 29 jobs.Sold property to two companies that will bring over 200 jobs and $30 million in new investment.
