Using Freading on Your Computer or eReader

How is Freading different?

eBooks can be read by many people at once – no waiting!

Each library cardholder gets four tokens each week to “spend” on eBooks

Freading offers a wide variety of eBooks, but the selection of eBooks available is not made by the library

Freading books are available in EPUB or PDF format only

Visit www.waukeganpl.org/eBooks and click the “Adobe Digital Editions” link.

Click Download.

Download the appropriate installer for your operating system (Windows or Mac)

Run the installer to open Digital Editions FREADING

Create an Adobe ID by following the link in the “Special Information” section FREADING

Click Get an Adobe ID.

Fill in the required information, then click Sign Up.

Visit waukeganpl.freading.com. You can search for books by “Categories” or by “Keyword.”

Click on the cover of the book you’d like to read, then click “Login to Download.”

Log in with your library barcode.

Click “Download EPUB”

Open with Adobe Digital Editions

If this is your first time using Adobe Digital Editions, you will be asked to authorize your computer with your Adobe ID. This will only need to be done once. FREADING

To transfer a book to your eReader, plug in the device, which should show up on the left hand side. Click and drag the book to your device.

eBooks are also available in PDF format. Download and transfer the file the same way you would an EPUB file.

To return an eBook early in Adobe Digital Editions, right click on the cover and click Return Borrowed Item.

General Information

Because eBooks are returned automatically at the end of the loan period, it is impossible to accrue overdue fines.

eBooks not owned by Waukegan Public Library cannot be obtained through interlibrary loan. Freading adds new titles every month, so check back often for your favorite authors.

Only patrons with Waukegan Public Library cards may download eBooks.

Freading eBooks are available in EPUB or PDF format only.

There’s no checkout limit for Freading eBooks. Instead, each library cardholder is issued 10 tokens each week.

EBooks “cost” between 1 and 4 tokens to download. Returning eBooks early does not refund your tokens.

Tokens accrue over time. You can accrue up to 20 tokens.
