Increased Efficiency Mandated for 2017 Current commercial refrigeration efficiency standards was released in April

2014 and is scheduled to take effect March 27, 2017.

Stricter energy efficiency standards will now require a maximum energy consumption for cooler and freezer doors specifically (based on door size) over the current standards that have been in effect since 2012.

In January 2015 the DOE also proposed new maximum energy requirements for commercial ice machines, condensers, and related water usage, with implementation targeted for January 28, 2018. This efficiency regulation will establish a new cap on energy consumption and implement energy consumption regulations on “continuous type” ice makers.

Department of Energy

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States Government concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material.

Our products have been instrumental in helping the worlds largest OEM’s achieve the results necessary to pass the DOE 2017 standards as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), “Commercial refrigerator, freezer, and refrigerator-freezer”.

Why Electronically Commutated (EC) Motors?

Page 8: EC Motors for Commercial Refrigeration DOE 2017 Compliance

Manufacturing That Eliminates Risk & Improves Reliability8

Why Electronically Commutated (EC) Motors? A typical old-technology shaded pole or permanent split capacitor (PSC) commercial

refrigeration motor runs at an efficiency level around 15%; 85% of the input power is used to run the motor itself, thus leaving only 15% available as usable output power.

An EC motor however uses advanced electronics to sense rotor position and switch supply accordingly instead of creating a magnetic field with mechanical brushes; it can therefore achieve efficiency levels in excess of 60%, consuming as a result far less electricity to produce the same output power as a comparable shaded pole or PSC motor.

An EC motor will also significantly reduce internal operating temperatures, as a large amount of heat is generated by the operation of the mechanical brushes in a shaded pole motor. In addition to the wasted input power, these higher internal temperatures increase wear and tear, reducing the life expectancy and reliability of the motor.

EConomy Motor The EConomy motor is a highly efficient

single speed EC motor with an operating range from 1 Watt to 30 Watts input; it has a soft start function and has an available pre-selected speed anywhere between 600 to 2100 rpm.

It is available in various voltage options including 120V, 230V, Global Voltage or in a 24VDC format.

A 2-speed version will be launched at the AHR Show in Las Vegas at the end of January 2017.

ECplus Motor The ECplus motor is a premium, highly

equipped EC motor, featuring three pre-set speeds, reverse functionality, operating anywhere between 1 watt and 22 watts input power.

Over the last 4 years, the ECplus motor

has been used extensively by major commercial refrigeration and vending machine OEM’s in the USA and in Europe. It has also established a significant presence in the commercial refrigeration after-market as the retrofit motor of choice, as well as the leading motor in new application development.

ECplus Advantages The ECplus can be supplied with a programmer that will allow speeds and direction of

rotation to be selected and changed via a laptop, allowing complete flexibility at the early stages of development of a new application.

– Power Range - one model covers 1 watt to 22 watts input power

– Speed Range - the only commercial refrigeration motor with three pre-selectable speeds, ranging from 300 to 2500rpm – time reverse also available

– Efficiency - in excess of 60%

– Soft Start Function - ensures a quiet ramp up to desired speedwhich assists in eliminating vibration noise and reducing powersurge on system start-up

– Time Reverse Available

– ATEX Compliance Available

EXRi50 Motor The EXRi50 series motor is a class-

leading global voltage, single speed, EC motor, with a uniquely slim physical profile.

It is designed with an integrated fan blade and is available with an optional fan ring and multiple fixing options that are designed specifically for commercial refrigeration applications.

The compact size of the motor also reduces the “air over motor” resistance, thus allowing a greater airflow than a conventional refrigeration motor

Summary Current AC fan technology will not allow OEM’s to meet the DOE 2017

requirements.

There is no “drop in replacement” solution for old AC technology.

Synchronous motors can offer advantages at very specific operatingpoints, but do not offer the flexibility of EC motors.

EC technology allows OEM’s to customize solutions via:– Speed Control– Speed, fan blade diameter iterations– DC Voltage Options– Soft Start Technology– Use of one motor SKU for many different coolers
