What is Virtualization?
• Emulation of one of more workstations/servers– Virtualization is the emulation of hardware within a software platform
– This allows a single computer to take on the role of multiple computers. This type of virtualization is often referred to as full virtualization
• Other types of virtualization– Virtual memory
– Virtual networks (VLAN)
– Virtual servers
– Virtual storage

Objectives of Virtualization
• There are four main objectives to virtualization, demonstrating the value offered to organizations– Increased use of hardware resources
– Reduced management and resource costs
– Improved business flexibility and
– Improved security and reduced downtime

History of Virtualization
• 1960s – Implemented by IBM to help split large mainframe machines into separate ‘virtual machines’
• 1980s – x86 revolution. Era of PC, LAN and the client server model
• 1999 – VMware introduced their first virtualization application for x86 based systems

Benefits of Virtualization
• Virtualized technology offers many benefits to organizations looking to migrate from a physical environment to a virtual setting– Easier Manageability
– Elimination of Compatibility Issues
– Fault Isolation
– Increased Security
– Efficient use of Resources
– Portability

VMWare ESX Server
• Deploy multiple virtual machines on a single physical server
• Market leading:– Performance
– Stability
– Scalability
– Cross-platform support

Properties of Virtual Machines
• Partitioning– Run multiple operating systems on one
physical machine
– Divide system resources between virtual machines

Properties of Virtual Machines
• Isolation– Fault and security isolation at the hardware
level
– Advanced resource controls preserve performance

Properties of Virtual Machines
• Encapsulation– Entire state of the virtual machine can be
saved to files
– Move and copy virtual machines as easily as moving and copying files

Properties of Virtual Machines
• Hardware-Independence– Provision or migrate any virtual machine to
any similar or different physical server

VMware VMotion
• Live migration of virtual machines
• Zero downtime

Storage VMotion
• Storage independent live migration of virtual machine disks
• Zero downtime to virtual machines
• LUN independent
• Supported for Fibre channel SANs

Cloud computing enables cloud services
• Characteristics:– On-Demand / Self Service
– Accessed via the internet
– Minimal/no IT skills to implement cloud services
– Underlying technology is transparent to the user
– Web browser or web service API based access
– Dedicated or shared resources
– Rapid Elasticity
– Measured service
• Cloud service offerings classified into three models– SaaS, PaaS, IaaS

First Step to Cloud – Virtualization
• Optimize existing resources – virtualize data center– Combine resources together and abstract them to create a virtual world
– Virtualization of application and infrastructure
• Extend the virtualization beyond a data center– Pool all your distributed resources from multiple sites

Private Cloud
• Cloudification of pooled & virtualized internal computing resources involves– Centralized service management, service creation, automation
– Self service, auto provisioning, metering, load balancing, security, tiering

Private Cloud – Federating with External Cloud
• A blend of internal and external cloud resources to present a seamless, managed service delivery to the business– Probably offers the best value to the enterprise
