ENHANCING INNOVATION CAPACITY FOR SUSTAINABLE TRYPANOSOMOSIS CONTROL IN GHIBE VALLEY, SOUTH WEST ETHIOPIA

Does this research deal with livestock goods and bads and if so how?
Who are the “next users” of the research and how will they use the findings?
The research aims to developing improved livestock health services delivery, to enhance the contribution of livestock for poverty reduction in the valley. On the other hand, the research could lead to change in ecology due to increased settlement and bush clearance for crop production using draught power
The results and lessons could be used by animal health departments of governments and, NARS to scale out community based tryps control to all tryps affected areas in Ethiopia and beyond
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
1986-1989 Research on productivity levels of trypano-sensitive
animals and efficiency of available trypanocidals
1990-2003 Research On how to control trypanosomosis in an area of high
drug resistance
2003-2006 Research on how to translate the successful control trial into a sustainable
mechanism for improved livestock health control
Current Phase: 2007-2011 Action research using the Asset based Community Development (ABCD) and the Innovation Systems
(IS) approaches to derive lessons on 1. how to bring about sustainable improvements in livestock health service delivery in the project site
2. how to translate improved livestock health into increased productivity and incomes
Purpose: To strengthen local capacity for innovation in animal health systems in the Ghibe Valley

• ABCD field based training , community mapping of existing assets and community action planning • ABCD experience sharing , review of ABCD action plans and community validation • Identifications of ABCD action plans requiring bridging support and linkages • Implementation of community action plans
• Baseline Innovation Appraisal • Feedback to stakeholders on the findings of the
baseline appraisal and identified priorities, entry points and appropriate partners
• Community based tryps control through establishing & strengthening trps cooperatives and training of Community Animal Heath Workers (CAHWs)
• Piloting market oriented goat fattening
• Partnerships developed to implement collaborative community based tryps control • 13 Tryps cooperatives established and capacitated to participate in the community based tryps control • Local policy change to acknowledge the contributions of CAHWs ( Certification and Institutional Support) • CAHWs capacitated to involve in tryps control( Pour On and treatment) • ABCD community capacitated to develop proposals for funding and approach local government for its
implementation ( access to basic services and establishment of tryps cooperatives)
