Copernicus will provide accurate, timely and easily accessible information
• To improve the management of the environment • To understand and mitigate the effects of climate change • To ensure safety and security for the European citizens.
Copernicus will consist of• Five families of dedicated satellites (Sentinels) specifically for the
operational needs of the Copernicus programme. The Sentinels will be launched from 2013.
• Missions from other space agencies, called Contributing Missions - already providing a wealth of data for Copernicus services
• The In situ Component which focuses on data acquired by a multitude of sensors on the ground, at sea or in the air.

ESA App Challenge
The ESA App Challenge searches for applications ideas for using Copernicus on mobile devices.
• Proposals shall address one or more Copernicus main thematic areas.• The submission of the application should consist of a base app containing
info and news on Copernicus• In addition to concepts for new mobile apps it is also possible to submit
ideas of how to extend existing apps by adding Copernicus data (e.g. enriching weather apps by providing information on location-based UV-radiation).
• Submission is open for all mobile operating systems.
PrizeThe winner will be rewarded with a cash prize of EUR 10,000 as well as the chance to get his idea further developed in one of the seven ESA Business Incubation Centres (BICs). The incubation package has a value of up to EUR 60,000.

ESA App Challenge – The Winning Idea 2012
© Ansur
• Satellite radar images in urban areas require in-situ verification due to backscatter
• In GEO-PICTURES, AnsuR created the smartphone app ASIGN, which captures and sends reliably geo-tagged and time-stamped images to UNOSAT at CERN
• Announced on Facebook, the app was successful in helping the UN produce better flood maps during the 2011 Thailand floods
Customer Benefit ASIGN’s crowdsourced in-situ photos provide for faster, higher quality remote-sensing products that help save lives, property, costs, and infrastructure.

EUROPEAN SATELLITE NAVIGATIONCOMPETITION 20131 April – 30 June 3013
www.galileo-masters.eu
About GALILEO
Galileo in short: Precision, Availability, Coverage
• Precision: In a combined GPS-Galileo use (compared to GPS by itself) the higher number of satellites available to the user will offer higher precision. From most locations, six to eight Galileo satellites will be visible which, in combination with GPS signals, will allow positions to be determined up to within a few centimetres.
• Availability: The high number of satellites will also improve the availability of the signals in high-rise cities, where buildings can obstruct signals from satellites that are low on the horizon.
• Coverage: Galileo will also provide a better coverage at high latitudes than GPS, thanks to the location and inclination of the satellites. This will be particularly interesting for Northern Europe.
