Chicago, ILRAP & RAS in December

It was so cold that the drum was frozen…25 °F.

PG58-22 containing 37% RAP and 5% RAS for a City of Chicago alleyways project

Increased recycled content in the winter mix and reduced equipment wear and tear by lowering the production temperature to 325 °F from 365 °F.

Officials representing Chicago wards were very excited about the environmentally friendly projects going on in their area.

Nova ScotiaCold, long haul

McAsphalt in Canada knows how to do cold, long hauls!

Cold and foggy with temperatures ranging from 41 °F to 55 °F.

PG 58-28 mix trucked to a jobsite 108 miles away.

Stable mix and 93.5% density before the finish roller.

Modoc National ForestOver 2-hour haul

Modoc National Forest is located in a remote section of Northern California…

…over a mountain pass

….that requires chains

….with temperatures in the 20s

….for an over 2-hour haul.

Mix type? ¾ -inch with a modified PG 62-38 binder and containing 15% RAP

VERY FAVORABLE performance compared to the hot mix section.

• No chunks after the belly dump• Mix came out of the chute “like sand”• Surpassed target densities

Carolina Motorsports60-mile haul

While only 0.7 miles long, this kart track has 16 turns and numerous tie-ins where different sections of the asphalt join together.

“These joints must be seamless”

-Blythe Construction

NuStar added Evotherm to maintain maximum workability for perfect tie-ns at the track.

TexasAchieving density with RAS

Century Asphalt in Texas evaluated using Evotherm 3G chemistry to get RAS and RAP back into the mix design

BEFORE:Clumping, poor workability, and inconsistent compaction

AFTERAble to use 17% RAP and add 3% RAS to the mix.

Workability had improved greatly and there were no visible signs of clumping

- Laydown Crew

Density readings became very consistent across the mat.

National City, CAQuick return to traffic

National City did a demonstration with CA Commercial Asphalt and ATP.

“Man, this stuff is great, I love it!”

-City Inspector

Just after the first few tons, 3 trucks loaded with Toyotas crossed over the mat without leaving any ruts.

CDOT I-70Longer Pavement Life

Evotherm has been used as part of a test section that begins at the west portal of Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial tunnel.

Average annual daily traffic of 30,000 that is 10% trucks and 4.85M ESALS (10-yr).

Snow….Chains….

Two years have gone by now and the Evotherm section continues to perform well, getting favorable reviews at the last field review for which a report is pending.

Napa, CAReduced Emission

Telfer Oil Company supplied Evotherm for use in a City of Napa paving project.

The city’s crew removed and replaced the existing pavment with ½” dense grade mix formulted with PG64-16 binder and Evotherm.

By constructing the pavement at lower temperatures, the city was able to reduce emissions and smoke at both the plant and jobsite.

San Francisco, CAGolden Gate National Recreation Area

Telfer Oil also supplied Evotherm for paving at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The mix was workable in cool temperatures and needed just 3 passes to achieve 92% densities

All parties were pleased with the field results.
