With Windows 8, you can no longer perform functions the way you were accustomed to in earlier Windows operating
systems.
Due to the lack of a Start Menu in the Windows 8 desktop, the fastest way to
perform simple tasks is to use keyboard shortcuts.
Certain keyboard shortcuts allow you to perform certain tasks much faster
than you could normally do when using a mouse.
Toggle Start Screen/Desktop
Press the Windows logo key on your keyboard when on the desktop to
open the Start Screen.
If you have no Metro apps
opened, use this shortcut to move instantly from the Start Screen back to the Windows 8
desktop.
Open Charms Bar
While holding down the Windows logo key, press the “C” key to open the
Charms Bar.
Using this keyboard shortcut is considerably
faster since you must wait for the Charms Bar to pop up when using the mouse.
Search for Apps
Press the Windows logo key and the “Q” key simultaneously to
open the “Search” Charm that allows you to search for and open installed applications.
Since the Start Menu is no longer present in Windows 8, this shortcut provides a
way for you to open applications much faster.
Search for Files
Press the Windows logo key and the “F” key simultaneously to open the Charm that allows you to search for
files on your computer.
Simply type the name of a file and select a search result to
open the item.
Open and Search in Windows 8 Settings
Press the Windows logo key and the “I”
key simultaneously to get to the
“Settings” Charm.
This Charm gives you access to the Control Panel
and Personalization features. It also allows you
to turn off, restart, and hibernate your computer.
You will be able to search for various
settings in Windows 8.
This shortcut gives you access to a feature that would
otherwise take several clicks to accomplish when
using a mouse.
