Our Version of China on the Map

We coloured & cut out an outline of China & glued it on the map. We decided to make it look

like the Chinese Flag by colouring it in red & making the stars out of yellow pipe cleaners

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Did You Know? The Chinese New Year Is the most important of the Chinese holidaysIt’s the time for giving gifts, feasting with family, celebrations & fireworks

CelebrationsLast for 15 days ! New Year’s Day begins on a New Moon & ends on a Full Moon 15 days later, which is called Lantern Festival. It is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade

The Chinese CalenderDates back to 2600 BC & is the oldest known calender being followed today

Did You Know?Their Year

Is based on the Lunar schedule (cycles of the moon) so each year the Chinese New Year will always fall on a different dateIt takes 60 years to complete the cycle

The Chinese CalenderFollows a 12 year pattern where every year is named after an

animalThere are various stories The Simplest IsThat Buddha ( or the Jade Emperor ) invited all the animals to join him for a New Year Celebration but only 12 turned upTo reward the ones that came Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they came

Here’s How They ArrivedThe Rat

Came first then The Ox Tiger Rabbit Dragon Snake Horse Goat (or Sheep) The Monkey Rooster Dog all followed & lastly

by The Boar (or Pig)

It’s Politically CorrectNow for the Chinese New Year to be called the ‘Lunar New Year’ as there are many Asian countries & cultures that also follow this calender
