Who is behind GreenHouse Games?

Sustainability Victoria is an agency of the Victorian Government which facilitates and promotes the sustainable use of resources

LESS (Low Energy Supplies and Services ) is an environmental company that has been delivering energy and water saving programs and products since 2001.

LESS is delivering the GreenHouse Games on behalf of Sustainability Victoria

What is the Challenge?

A fun, free, fully supported online program for schools

to engage students and employees and their

families in taking sustainable actions at

home to become GreenHouse Heroes

What is the Challenge?

Each participating

family earns points for

their school with every

Superhero action taken

at home. The school

and household with the

most points wins!

Challenge Process

Schools register online.

Households register and then take action by changing habits and creating a greener home.

Households have 8 weeks to earn points and contribute to their school’s total. Households report weekly.

Chance to win daily prizes, weekly theme prizes and a grand prize for active participants.

Continue to live a greener life and become a GreenHouse superhero.

The role of the school

• Find coordinator/s • Decide if Challenge will be part of classroom studies or

stand alone initiative• Promote through newsletters, assemblies, PTA, etc• Recruit households • Recruitment and/or celebratory event?• Encourage households to stay involved and earning

points• High performing schools win prizes

The role of LESS• Provide support materials and tools for

coordinators• Project team available to provide individual

coordinator support and answer queries• Report to all schools (via coordinators) on overall

Challenge progress and scores• Help Desk (email and 1300 number) to support

households to take sustainable actions• Make the Challenge as easy for schools and

households as possible!

The role of coordinators• Can be up to 3 coordinators• Coordinators can be teachers, parents or responsible students• Be the communicator between the school community and LESS • Use the support materials supplied to promote the Challenge to

the school community to get involved and register for the Challenge

• Distribute household recruitment packs (zip up bags and magnets)• Encourage households to complete the Challenge for the full 8

weeks• Report back to school community about progress and results

Types of actions households can take

Lots of actions to choose from to reduce electricity, water, waste and transport fuel, eg:

• Adjust the thermostat on heaters• Switch to GreenPower• Reduce the use of the clothes dryer• Reduce car usage• Start a vegetable garden • Install a rainwater tank • Fix leaking taps• Put a ‘no junk mail’ sticker on your letterbox• Recycle electronic goods you no longer need

Prizes and awards

• School, greatest abatement overall • School, greatest abatement per

household, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place• Certificate of participation • Coordinators prizes• Householders grand prizes, daily

and theme week prizes• Prizes for coordinators to give

Timing

• Register school by 27th August 2010• Recruit households by 8th October 2010• Challenge start date is 11th October 2010• The Challenge lasts 8 weeks• Challenge finish date is 10th December 2010• Main prizes presented in early 2011
