Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons are small enough to be located anywhere.

The server uses these micro-location trigger IDs to tell either the mobile device or another system to perform a contextual action designed by the business owner.

iBeacons

iBeacons - Intelligent Store Lighting

1 User chooses color preference and shopping list

2 Intelligent lighting + Beacons identify the user and turn on a spot light with the user preferred color in the shelf containing the product of choice

3 Beacons guide user inside the store

4 Preferred products are spotted by intelligent lighting on user proximity

Our Example

We wanted to look at exposure to motion, and see if we could start tracking the data

1. Get your hardware 2. Get a Google Analytics account

3. Implement some code

Our Example

How do you set it up?

Register a Universal Analytics account

■ Get into Google Analytics

■ Create an account and select a property that you want to manage

■ You’ll get a key that you’ll need to use for the future

■ You need some python code (we copied from a blog)

■ You need the universal key from Google

■ Write the code to Raspberry Pi

Our Example

Potential Use Cases

■ Retail sales environment (Best Buy, Walmart, etc.)

■ Conferences and exhibits■ Automotive dealerships■ Grocery stores (looking at traffic by

product)

What else can you do with the data?

Page 27: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

Unlimited applications for wearables, iBeacons and other technologies

Cost effective so technology can be applied without significant capital expenditure

Challenges include identifying relevant use cases for B2B and addressing potential consumer privacy concerns

Finding the right opportunities for us as researchers need further development

Extensive opportunities for passive measurement of consumer behavior that can be linked to survey or sales data

3 Fundamental principles to approach experience design

Page 29: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014
Page 30: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

1. Context is kingThere is an unspoken insight behind the context

Page 31: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

Behavior PatternsLook out for behavior patterns and match that with clear user needs.

MarketTrendsObserve the market and understand what new business models are out there.

ResearchToolsUse all the tools that you have in your power to understand your audience

Page 32: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

2. Perfection is a processEvolution is the key to a successful product

Page 33: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

Fail EarlyPut your design in front of people as soon as possible

Iteration & DesignGet feedback and iterate many times, this will make your design stronger

Measure theExperiencePut metrics behind your design and let that drive your desicions

Page 34: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

3. Remove confusionComplexity is part of our life, make peace with it

Page 35: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

Simple is not the goalUnderstand that complexity is part of life, and look for contextual solutions

DesignPatternsWork with conventions and design patterns, when you know the rules, you can break them.

Make it RelevantRemember to understand the contexts and

Page 36: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

Empathyor how to care for what you do

Page 37: Internet of Things meets UX #Flipthinking - Globant San Francisco 2014

INNOVATIONUSER EXPERIENCE STUDIO

Be aware of context

Observe behavior, understand conventions, user your time to drill down on activities and context oriented reserach.

Iterate till you get it

Iteration is a powerfull tool. Don’t expect to get it right in the first try, don’t wait till the end to show your results, iterate, fail early and progress soon.

Remove the confusion

Simplicity is not the goal, clarity is the goal. Remember, it can be complex and still be relevant and a pleasent experience.

Be empathic

Put your self in the shoes of your users, your client, your team, your developers, the technology, make your self available for conversation and evolution, it will make a world of diference.
