NEW MEDIA

New media refers to on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device. This may include interactive user feedback and creative participation.

New media technologies are mostly digital and allow people to interact.

These can be websites, computer multimedia, video games, CD-ROMS, and DVDs.

However new media does not include publications such as films, TV programmes, books and magazines unless they contain some sort of digital interaction.

YOUTH AND NEW MEDIA As new media is allowing nearly 24-hour media

access, the amount of time young people spend with entertainment media has risen dramatically.

Some statistics show that 8–18 year-olds spend an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes using entertainment media in a typical day (more than 53 hours a week).

Also, 96% of 18–29 year olds and three-quarters (75%) of teens now own a mobile.

This are important figures to consider when using new media within my magazine. As my target audience will include teenagers and young adults, I will help promote new ways they can access and interact with the magazine using their mobile phones.

WEBSITES New media includes websites where people can get

involved and interact with others. The two main social media websites where people can

do this are Facebook and Twitter where billions of users can share their own information and stories.

According to reports, 15% of US adults get their news primarily from social media.

Distribution can be gained via Facebook by creating your own pages and sharing them with others to go viral for free. This way people can like, comment on your post/pages and even share them with their own friends.

Twitter can also be used in a similar way by tweeting your own opinions and experiences and also trending certain topics to get the word across about particular stories and events.

MORE COMPUTER MULTIMEDIA Another fantastic website for distribution is Youtube.

This is a video site where anyone can share their own videos across the world- allowing people to view, comment, like and even subscribe to their own channel.

Youtube is also a great form of multimedia when it comes to discovering new music.

As my magazine will be a music magazine, many of my artists included in the articles will have their own Vevo channel on Youtube where my readers can listen to their new music as soon as it is released!

Youtube allows people to interact with others while discovering new things and presenting their own work.

MAGAZINES USE OF NEW MEDIA NME allow their readers to subscribe to their digital

edition of their magazine so their audience can view NME online.

As well as NME having their own website , they also have a variety of social media websites including Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Tumblr, Instagram, Youtube and Soundcloud.

Spotify and Soundcloud are also very useful social media websites when it comes to music as they let people share and listen to music in other ways.

Q magazine also has some of their own social media websites plus they also have a link on their own websites to purchase t-shirts to their audience’s taste- another way of readers interacting using new media.
