Open‐Source

• Some of the best NGS software is open‐source.•EBI / Broad Institute. (funding models / philosophies) • Great software written by people who use it.

• Where do you turn to for support?•Industry cannot cross their fingers & hope for community support on a project wiki.

Security

Open‐Source Software is not always written with security concerns as a priority.

• We saw this from Phase 1. – was written to help good people do great things.

• A major part of testing in Phase 2.

• Pistoia is not going to publish the findings.• Nothing was found that isn’t fixable.• Some have more work to do than others.

Global & Externalised Projects

Rise in the number of global projects often with 3rd parties contributing.

This makes cloud hosted platforms attractive, and can reduce the risk of allowing 3rd parties inside corporate firewalls.

The Pistoia Approach

• A common set of requirements from a number of Pharmaceutical Companies.

• Shared risk funding to help kick‐start commercial services in this space.
