REPORT 2012

4Annual Memory 2012

1. Letter of the President

The 2012 has been a remarkable year on the path of the Tecnova Technological Centre, due to the culmination of two major milestones; the new headquarter construction located in the Tecnolo-gical Park of Almeria (PITA) and the development of one of its key projects, the Experimental Centre.

Both projects represent the past, the present and the

future for the technological development in the Auxi-

liary Industry for Agriculture, Postharvest and Packa-

ging, so they are two of the main pillars for the R&D&I

progress in Andalusia and Spain for all the companies

belonging to the sector.

This would not have been possible without the support

of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to-

gether with the Government of Andalusia who finan-

ced the new Tecnova headquarter infrastructure where

nowadays many research and quality services are ca-

rried out thanks to the competitive equipment and to the

qualified workforce that bring knowledge to companies.

Moreover, and thanks to the involvement from the

Foundation organizations, the Experimental Centre is

now a reality, and not only the Solnova greenhouse has

been built up, an initiative supported by the Ministry of

Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the

Government of Andalusia, but also the majority of the

greenhouses of different typologies have been built for

carrying out different testing research in the agricultural

field, allowing setting up the Centre as an international

reference in technology under plastic.

In this sense, the high level of demand on quality and

improvement in the excellence of this two project has

meant in 2012, a progress in the service range that we

offer, so we firmly believe in the latest technologies for

our facilities by means of the specialized laboratories

which offer a wide coverage in the field of horticultu-

ral, postharvest and packaging production technology,

a workforce that brings detailed advice in the R&D&I

project development and in the internationalization pro-

cesses for companies as well as qualified and adapted

training for all of our partners and companies in general.

The efforts carried out in Tecnova during the last years

deserve special attention because of the internationali-

zation process as a challenge for companies and as a

5Annual Memory 2012

strategy to continue for the coming years with the main

purpose of increasing our competitiveness and innova-

tive capacity in new markets. For that reason, the Foun-

dation is embedded in five projects of international coo-

peration in different continents: two projects in Africa,

one in Europe, one in South America and the last one in

Asia with high expectations of developing a new project

in China. Thanks to the international expansion, Tecnova

is collaborating with other research centres, companies,

institutions, etc., from different places of the world that

allow the knowledge and Spanish technology exchange

while at the same time creates wealth for the sector.

It is important to mention the commitment that Tecnova

makes in order to offer quality training and to develop

promotion activities between its members through in-

novative proposals. For this purpose, this year we have

the pleasure to receive high level gurus such as Mr.

Fernando Trías de Bes, Ms. Edurne Pasabán, Ms. Elena

Alfaro and Mr. Mario Alonso Puig and we have organi-

zed several workshops and seminars of science popu-

larization for the sector. In addition, the Foundation has

presence in international fairs representing our compa-

nies and we organized our Annual Board Dinner, this

event gathers all the entrepreneurs from the agricultural

sector in a relaxed atmosphere which took place in a

special environment, El Muelle del Levante (East dock)

in the port of Almeria.

It is evident that challenges for 2013 are to positioning

ourselves as a technological community of reference

for companies at national level and to open new mar-

kets of interest where knowledge and technology of Al-

meria can be disseminated through research work and

experimentation in the field of agro-industry.

All these initiatives have been possible thanks to the

fundamental involvement from companies belonging

to the Foundation as well as organisms and institutions

which have made a commitment to good work of the

Technological Centre since it began in 2011. Before finis-

hing, I would like to use this opportunity for thanking the

companies that have been incorporated into the Foun-

dation in 2012: Agroindustrial Kimitec, Aldeilla Suminis-

tros Industriales, Bionutrición Vegetal, Deretil Agronutri-

cional, Ecohidro Agua y Medio Ambiente, Hortalan Med,

Induser Poniente, Ispemar, Soluciones Agrícolas Natu-

rales, Laboratorios Econatur, Leon y Vergel Asesores

and Pelemix.

Finally, let me express once more my most sincere ac-

knowledgement and gratitude to all the staff working at

the Tecnova Foundation, as well as to the businesses,

and private and public entities and institutions involved.

All of them, with their effort and involvement, have made

it possible to develop all the initiatives and activities or-

ganized from Tecnova for the benefit and advancement

of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture sector.

New services and challenges in theR&D&I Department

Due to the new Tecnova headquarters, the Technologi-cal Centre could offer new tangible services to the com-panies thanks to its fully equipped and prepared faci-lities in the field of the Post-harvesting and Packaging Technology and Horticultural Production Technology.

In this sense, the new building has two pilot plants, one of them is a IV range plant and the other is an agro-industrial plant which both have many meeting rooms available for the companies, as well as laboratories in di-fferent fields such as in vitro culture, postharvest analy-sis, physical-chemical analysis, etc., sensory analysis and gastronomic innovation laboratories. Others faci-lities available for companies are the meeting and the training room, where training courses, workshops, pro-ducts and services presentation are carried out among other. It all adds up to a package of services available for companies.

Moreover, thanks to the 12 hectares of field located in Viator (Almeria), which are the Experimental Centre and the different greenhouses typology where the compa-nies could develop agronomic testing in order to assess their products, produce new crops, etc.

This is the culmination of two major milestones for Tecnova: the construction of an Experimental Centre to accomplish field testing and a technological and functional building where the organizations could find a place for developing their iniciatives from the beginning to the launching in the market, thanks to the guidance of a specialized work team and to the technology that adapts to their main needs.

Tecnova Projects developed in theHorticultural Production Technology Area

Line for Environmental Sustainability

− • Project:“IntegralEnergeticManagement of Greenhouse Crop Systems”

This ambitious Project, started in 2009, has continued with its development on the part of TECNOVA TC, until becoming the referent in terms of research for the Foun-dation, as well as to the companies in the Auxiliary In-dustry for Agriculture. This project is co-financed by the Andalusia Regional Ministry for Innovation, Science and Business and the ERDF Funds.

The objectives pursued by this project are to provide im-provement from research to intensive horticulture under greenhouse conditions by means of applying innova-tion to the energetic management of exploitation, to the design and planning of production and installations, to the management in the use of inputs and to the valori-zation of waste in intensive agriculture.

The city council of Viator has provided 12 hectares of plot of land for the research implementation. Thanks to this contribution, and in cooperation with the companies within the sector, work is now being done for the deve-lopment of an experimental centre in which to carry out research for the project. This centre would also serve as a showroom for the horticultural technology of Almería.

During 2012, Tecnova designed a new structure for a sustainable greenhouse from an environmental and profitability point of view, for that reason we have ins-talled renewable energy to it.

Tecnova has designed a greenhouse whose structure has been developed at the Experimental Centre and it adds solar panels in the east face of the greenhouse and a wind turbine in the south-east face which provi-

31Annual Memory 2012

des together with the panels enough energy to supply the consumption produced by automatisms which provide energy to the greenhouse. It is called SOL-NOVA and it offers improvement in solar gain, pro-ductivity increase, etc. and also adds the possibility of having an interplanting crop system.

Moreover, a separating machine of raffia from green-house wastes has been designed for this project.

This technology has been developed in order to re-duce the wastes from greenhouses and to manage them for their reuse in the development of new pro-ducts.

Linked to this project, a Testing Experimental Centre of great international projection, with a view to beco-me a technological and business meeting place that will provide an answer to the current challenges posed by intensive agriculture via R&D&I.

During 2012, works have concluded to the following facilities:

The Experimental Centre is composed by three parcels distributed in terraces in which the following construc-tions have been carried out:

• Intheparcellocatedatthesouth, threepoolshave been built, one pool for the collection of water from the drainage of the culture, the second pool is used for the collection of storm-water and the third one is the irrigation pool.

• Adjacenttothegreenhouse,6auxiliary warehouses have been built and distributed within the three parcels.
