Japan repaired deep chasms in the Joban Expressway linking Tokyo and quake-damaged Fukushima in 6 days.The traffic restriction to the Tohoku Expressway, a transport and commercial artery in the region, was lifted on March 24 – two weeks after the disaster.

Quays of all major ports in the quake-hit pacific coast from Aomori to Ibaraki became useable by March 24.The ports damaged by the tsunami are gradually recovering their function.

A commercial airplane landed at Sendai Airport on April 13 for the first time since the disaster.

Kyodo

The reconstruction of Sendai Airport showed surprisingly rapid progress thanks to the cooperation between foreign military forces and Japanese Self-Defense Forces. The entire runway was restored and became useable by March 28 . (Rescue planes were allowed to use the airport from March 16.) Passenger flights from Haneda-Sendai and Osaka (Itami)-Miyagi resumed on April 13,a month after the earthquake.

Disposal of Debris

Sorting and recycling the debris is criticalto ensure a safe and speedy cleanup

Examples of Recycling

Turn wood into chips for biomass fuel,construction material for temporaryhousing or pulp material

Use debris to construct mounts to be usedas breakwaters as well as evacuation sites
