Smart Sponge® Technology

• Smart Sponge is an innovative filter media that:– Removes or eliminates contaminants such as hydrocarbons and

bacteria at the street level on contact with limited or no infrastructure– Is deployed in specific quantities based on engineering calculation– Provides solutions that can help reduce beach closures– Utilizes non-invasive technology that requires no electricity or moving

parts and is recyclable.– Fully encapsulates recovered oil, preventing it from leaching or leaking

back into the environment

Smart Sponge® Technolo gy

• COMBINES TWO SETS OF PROPERTIES• Physical/Mechanical

• Media is porous, resilient and elastic

• Combines chemical absorbent properties

with excellent hydraulics

• Chemical• Chemically selective

• Water repellent

• Hydrophobic

• Oleophilic

• Absorption vs. Adsorption

• Antimicrobial (biostatic)

ABSORPTION vs. ADSORPTION

• Absorption--Contaminant is trapped within the structure •Adsorption—Contaminant is trapped on the surface of the structure

Municipal Stormwater

Long Beach, CA

• Installed 1900 Ultra Urban Filters in 2004.

• Over 3 year period est. 91,963 pounds of trash, debris, sediment, oil, grease and organics were removed.

• Future plans include purchase of 3750 UUFs for replacement and expansion as part of a 16 city program with support of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009.

Page 46: Smart Sponge Technology

Norwalk, CT

• Installed 275 Ultra Urban Filters in 2004.

• Norwalk conducted field testing indicating a 75% reduction in hydrocarbons and bacteria. Three rounds of cleaning also yielded 37,976 pounds of trash and debris.

• Future plans include purchase of 100 UUFs for replacement filters, expansion to 100 additional locations and the installation of an end of pipe vault application.

Municipal Stormwater

Village of Babylon, NY

• Village of Babylon has been instrumental in the initial field testing of AbTech end of pipe vaults. Babylon initially installed three vaults in 2006.

• After two years of field experience the Village of Babylon and Suffolk County announced the expansion of the end of pipe vaults to all 92 of their stormwater outfall pipes that drain into Long Island Sound.

North Carolina DOT – Nags Head

• NC-DOT Ocean Outfall (study) Project has purchased 960 Smart Paks for installation at the Conch Street Outfall which serves a drainage basin of 53 acres.

• Installation of the 60 ft. vault designed by Moffitt and Nichol Engineering will be completed in the Fall of 2009.

• Based on the results of the test a total of eight installations are being considered for treatment with Smart Sponge.

• 77 Acre Food Processing and Distribution center on impaired waterway required comprehensive stormwater plan to receive construction permit.

• Treatment train of detention pond, hydrodynamic separator and AbTech Smart Sponge Vault provided best treatment option at roughly half the cost of alternatives such as UV.

Airports

Westchester County, NY

• Shortly after initial installation of 35 filters in 2004 a fuel spill occurred and the Smart Sponge successfully captured the contamination before it entered the stormwater pipes.

• This early capture prevented a costly cleanup and led to an airport wide implementation the following year.

• AbTech’s UK distributor participated in an award winning program which demonstrated Smart Sponge’s ability to provide dramatic cost savings and waste reduction by encapsulating oil in the Oil Water Separators.

• Demonstrated a 64% cost savings and a 99% reduction in generated waste.

• Test project began in spring 2009. After 8 weeks removed 58 pounds of hydrocarbons in one test catch basin.

• Project success will be documented in fall 2009 with plans for expansion.

• Product pictures and results to be provided after inspection. This picture shows site prior to installation of AbTech UUFs.
