REALTY

Jennifer and John’s romantic weekend

On June 13, the couple head-ed for a little break at Casa Aramara, the expansive beachfront home of Girls Gone Wild mogul Joe Fran-cis, in Punta Mita, Mexico. The couple was accompanied by a group of friends and to-gether they spent the week-end lounging on the house’s beachfront patio, enjoying their Mexican getaway. “Jen spent time laying out on the loungers on the patio. John was always around, standing by her, making sure she was comfortable,” People quoted an onlooker, as saying. Before departing for Mexi-co, Aniston and Mayer were also spotted discreetly hold-ing hands while double dat-ing with Aniston’s best pal and former ‘Friends’ co-star Courteney Cox and her hub-by David Arquette.

Cruise gets bulletproof cars for family

According to showbizspy.com, the actor has kitted out all the vehicles he owns with state of the art security to keep his beloved family safe, reports the Daily Tele-graph. “It sounds like Tom has taken a page out of one of his action movies. A-list celebrities know they can’t be too careful,” says a source. “Tom’s vehicles look per-fectly normal, but in reality they are more like armored trucks. He really, really loves his cars and he can afford the best.” To say that the actor must have spent a small for-tune would not

be a lie, for as a source tells In Touch Weekly magazine, Cruise owns all kinds of cars.”Tom is a car nut. He has practical everyday cars, classic collectibles and high-powered sports cars like the

Porsche 911 Turbo,” the source said. “Of course he loves every minute behind the wheel, but he’s not stupid and he’s not going to take any chances while he’s driving.”

Tom Cruise is so determined to keep wife Katie Holmes and his three kids safe that he has had all his cars fit-ted with bulletproof glass, and got bombproof features in-stalled in them.

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer continue to heat up their relationship, this time by flying off to Mex-ico over the weekend.

Upset Kat planning to dump SalmanRumours are rife that one of the hottest couples in Bol-lywood, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, is heading for splitsville. The final blow to their relationship came in the form of the spat between Salman and Shah Rukh Khan on Katrina’s birthday. After splitting from his former girlfriend Aish-warya Rai, Sal-man had finally cashed in all his emotions on Katrina, but he seems to have lost her too as she is quite upset with him. Industry sources said Ka-trina is no mood to forgive him for his behaviour with Shah Rukh on her birthday which attracted much media at-tention.The sources said

that after the incident Sal-man and Katrina are not on talking terms.‘Katrina is blaming Salman for the entire episode, ‘ said a common friend.Katrina opined that Salman should have restrained him-

self as he was playing the host. ‘But certain things are not in anyone’s control and it is destined to happen, ‘ Ka-trina told a leading TV chan-nel in an interview. A close friend of Salman said: ‘He is good at heart. He

took initiative for the party to please Ka-trina. But everything went wrong.’ Salman and Katrina’s relationship was al-ready going through a rough patch. Ka-trina’s ambition is the reason for Salman’s anguish. The Brit-ish-born actress has long stopped taking his advice regarding her professional life, which irked the actor.Salman, who is known for his hot temper, had objec-tions to Katrina’s choice of films, her co stars and even the outfits she wore for some films.

Interview with Aneez Bazmee, The Director Of ‘Singh Is Kinng’With a string of back-to-back hits like ‘Deewangee’, ‘No Entry’ and ‘Welcome’, Aneez Bazmee is one of the most highly paid and sought after directors in Bollywood to-day. He comes together with Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif for the biggest release of 2008 – ‘Singh Is Kinng’, releasing on Thursday, 7th August. A short tete-e-tete with the happening film-maker: ‘Singh Is Kinng’ is the most awaited film of 2008. What’s it about? It’s about a kind-hearted Happy Singh (Akshay), who lives in a village in Punjab and wants to help people. But he becomes a pain in their neck because of his stu-pidity. They get fed up with him, fool him and send him

to Australia on a mission. How he gets there and be-comes a king forms the rest of the story. What prompted you to repeat the Akshay-Katrina combi-nation in ‘Singh Is Kinng’?I narrated the script to Ak-shay over the phone and he agreed instantly. He loved the concept. I had worked with Katrina (Kaif) in ‘Wel-come’ earlier and share a great comfort level with her. Even my producer (Vipul Shah) has done ‘Namastey London’ with her. She fit the role to the tee anyway, so we were more than happy to have her back. If that isn’t enough, the audience loves the Akshay-Katrina combi-nation on screen. It’s always worked at the box-office.You’ve done two comedies,

‘No Entry’ and ‘Welcome’. ‘Singh Is Kinng’ is your third comedy. Are comedies your forte? After ‘No Entry’ and ‘Wel-come’, I know I am associ-ated with making comedies, but that’s not how I would like to get typecast. My films will start looking for-mulaic after a point. I wrote some comedies for David Dhawan but have also made romantic films and thrillers like ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ and ‘Deewangee’. After ‘Singh Is Kinng’ releases, I’m back to romance with a pure love story tentatively called ‘It’s My Life’ starring Harman Baweja and Genelia D’Souza. Having said that, I don’t have a problem with people who say that I make mindless comedies. At the

end of the day, they work at the box-office, which means that the audience is lap-ping them up. Bollywood is about feel-good escapist cinema. Everyone wants to have a good laugh at the end of the day over popcorn and a drink. People who pay for tickets should walk out with a smile on their face. ‘Singh Is Kinng’ is a complete fun film.Unlike other makers, you take time to make your films?I take my time to write and execute a film. I admire those who make films in quick succession. ‘Singh Is Kinng’ happened quickly because my producer Vipul (Shah) had everything planned and ready. This explains why I have a release within eight months of ‘Welcome’.We observe that you enjoy shooting your films abroad?I’m making commercial films. They need to have the required scale, gloss and glamour. I’ve just shot ‘Singh Is Kinng’ in the Gold Coast and Egypt. I shot ‘No Entry’ in Dubai. The other reason I prefer shoot-ing overseas is because it’s less troublesome. In India, there’s too much hassle se-

curing permissions, com-bating traffic and handling the police. Also, actors are far more disciplined while shooting abroad and don’t have a regular string of visi-tors and friends on the sets. What was the objective of shooting a video with Ak-shay Kumar and Snoop Dogg on the title song of ‘Singh Is Kinng’?We made one for ‘Welcome’ and now ‘Singh Is Kinng’ has one, as the end credits roll. It’s a great marketing tool and adds to the excitement around the film. Also, I like my films to end on a happy note. In any case, this music video is no ordinary one. We managed to get the legend-ary rapper, Snoop Dogg on board. My college-going daughter screamed, “Oh my god! Snoop Dogg!’” when I told her we had struck a deal with him.‘Singh Is Kinng’ has a strong ensemble cast. Have you done justice to everyone’s characters?I normally work with en-semble casts, and even in ‘Singh Is Kinng’, other than Akshay, Katrina and Neha, we have big names like Om Puri, Jaaved Jaaferi, Kirron Kher, Ranvir Shorey, Yash-

pal Sharma and Sonu Sood. I am a writer first. When I write roles, I give every-one importance and make sure that their characters are properly fleshed out. Mallika (Sherawat) was worried that she appeared just two reels before the interval in ‘Wel-come’, but ended up bagging tremendous appreciation. We hear that Akshay charges a huge salary. Is that true?He does but then his films work brilliantly and produc-ers are willing to offer it to him. So why not? Finally, any favourite scenes in ‘Singh Is Kinng’?(Laughs) That’s a bad ques-tion to ask a director! I’m meant to like every scene of my film! On a serious note, I think some of the action scenes we’ve canned on the Gold Coast are absolutely brilliant. They’re a treat to watch. There’s also a very emotional scene when the villagers fool Akshay. It’s one of my favourites.Any parting words?Go watch ‘Singh Is Kinng’ with your family this sum-mer and enjoy it! Kat is paired opposite a hero of her age. So obvi-ously with two young good looking people get together on screen, the chemistry is bound to be awesome. Everyone who was pres-ent on the sets of the film couldn’t stop raving about how good they look togeth-er!” informs the source. But is it that in this process she isn’t been able to con-centrate on her personal life? We all are aware about

the rift developing between this babe and her beau Sal-man Khan. The way this diva is choos-ing the right filmy scripts at the moment, we hope that she also concentrates in constructing a positive script when it comes to her love life with Sallu. After all everyone likes to see a happy ending.

Yes, I’m wearing a Bikini: PriyankaPriyanka was shooting in Miami for Karan Johar’s romantic comedy Dostana. And she had a ball.“I’ve worked with Abhishek and John before. But never like this. Their bonding is infectious. Dostana was one big party. It’s a beachside sporty film. And I’m very much a water babe. The di-rector Tarun Mansukhani’s is new but his wit sparkles. He’s written a really urbane tongue-in-cheek comedy.”So has she changed her mind about wearing a bi-kini? “The producer Karan Johar didn’t ask me to wear a bikini. And I wouldn’t be comfortable in one. But this is a beach movie. So it’s only natural that I get into beach-

will be wearing even tinier clothes.”

Priyanka Chopra can’t stop raving about the new love in her life.“No, his name isn’t Harman. It’s someone called Boo, a pet robot teedy-bear who accompanies me everywhere in Love Story 2050. He’s all pink and the cutest creature on earth. I want to take him home.”Explains the ac-tress, “I was aware of Boo from the time he was con-ceived. It was Har-

wear. And I don’t mind at all. Because everyone else

man Baweja’s sister Rowena who thought of Boo. I don’t think it’d have happened without her. I’ve watched Boo acquire a life right in front of me. So it’s quite an exciting process.”So attached has Priyanka be-come to Boo that she wanted to carry him home after the shooting. And the Bawejas who’ve watched Priyanka stand by their project from the time Kareena Kapoor opted out, would be only too happy to let Priyanka have Boo.Says Priyanka, “This was one film that’s filled with gadgets and electronic toys. But Boo is special. Because he’s mine. Love Story 2050 is my second hi-tech film

after Krissh. And I’m doing one more Drona. But Love Story was special because I did my career’s first double role with two

different looks for the two halves set in two different periods. Boo was part of my futuristic look. I feel this film carried sci-fi in India to another level.”

Interestingly Love Story 2050 will be followed by another FX-motivated adventure saga Shankar’s Robot. Priyanka had been signed for it when it was a different set-up with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.“When FX turned a cor-ner with Krissh I was part of it. Now when it som-ersaults with Love Story 2050 and Drona I’m part of both.Am I proud to be in these projects, or not?”

Critical protection for you and your retirementRetirement. It’s supposed to be a wonderful time… a time of relaxation and enjoyment that you’ve worked hard for, saved for and looked for-ward to over the course of your working career. But what if you or your part-ner is diagnosed with a criti-cal illness just before or after you begin your retirement? If you’re not prepared, you could spend a good portion of your savings dealing with that critical illness, putting a major dent in the retire-ment portfolio that you’ve worked so hard to build over the years. The five- to 10-year period just before and after you retire is known as the “retirement risk zone.” With such a short time hori-zon to retirement, absorbing the cost of a critical illness during this period could put your retirement plans in se-rious jeopardy. But there is something that can help mit-igate that risk: critical illness insurance.SAVING FOR RETIRE-MENT INVOLVES MORE THAN RRSPSMeet Mike and Sandy – both are 37 years old, nonsmok-ers and have three young children. Mike owns his own landscaping business and Sandy does the

bookkeeping. They are very comfortable, but definitely concerned about saving for retirement, sending their kids to university and saving for a rainy day. Mike and Sandy have a to-tal of $250,000 in retirement savings and are working with their advisor to protect the future growth of these assets so they can enjoy their retirement. They think that putting money into their

RRSPs will cover all their bases. However, Mike and Sandy’s advisor, Jim, poses a ques-tion: Suppose that, at age 60, one of them is diagnosed with a critical illness or has a stroke or a heart attack. How will they cover the costs to recover without tapping into their retirement nest egg? Jim suggests that they con-

sider critical illness insur-ance to help protect their retirement savings. He ex-plains that some group plans now offer critical illness insurance, but since Mike owns his own company, he’ll need to consider an in-dividually owned plan. Mike and Sandy think about it. They’re non-smoking, healthy individuals, so it’s hard to imagine either one of them suffering a critical ill-ness. Still, they know it can happen. Jim assures them that the fi-nancial commitment to pur-chase a critical illness policy is affordable and, depending on how much coverage they purchase, the premium can be about the same as the total fee that they pay on the mu-tual funds in their RRSPs.MIKE AND SANDY ARE READY. ARE YOU?Mike and Sandy decide to buy critical illness insurance and help protect their retire-ment income.Take a look at your own situ-ation. Could you survive the financial strain of a critical illness? For most people, the answer is no. Talk to your advisor today about critical illness insurance and how it can help protect you and your retirement.

Bollywood unites behind Muslim actorsOutright condemnation or tight-lipped silence. India’s film fraternity Monday united behind its Muslim actors -- including the four Khans Shah Rukh, Aamir,

Salman and Saif -- who have been threatened by the little known Indian Muja-hideen outfit that has also claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad blasts. The group has purportedly written an email stating that Muslim actors must stop

working in films immediate-ly or face death. The email was received Sunday, a day after 21 blasts killed 50 peo-ple and injured 200 in Guja-rat’s main city Ahmedabad.

Prashant Pandey, writer of Ram Gopal Varma’s “Contract”, an action thriller that released last week and is said to be uncannily similar to how the Ahmedabad blasts played out, said it was unfor-tunate if actors were being tar-geted in the name of religion.“An actor has no religion. One cannot categorise an actor on that basis. His per-sona is different as an individual both on and off-

screen, “ Pandey told.Renowned director Aziz Mirza, whose “Kismat Kon-nection” has just been re-leased, said terrorists must be cold shouldered.“The terrorists are stupid guys. You don’t react to

them. You just negate them. They can do whatever they want. Nobody listens to mad dogs. Nobody in the industry will give a reaction.”According to Bollywood trade analyst, people were “shocked but the producers, writers, directors or even the actors have not issued any

statement on this yet”.Describing the threats as “very sad and very unfortu-nate”, Adarsh said: “At the moment, there have been no official reports in the indus-try. What do actors have to do with the attacks? It is a free country and one has the right to do whatever she or he wants to.”Actor-turned-filmmaker

Sanjay Khan, a Muslim by religion, refused to com-ment on the threats and just said: “I think this is a media created hype and it is com-pletely blowing matters out of proportion. I don’t want to contribute and give more air to this (issue). There is no threat to Bollywood so far as

all of this is concerned.”Filmmaker Jagmohan Mun-dra, whose next release “Shoot on Sight” is a film on international terrorism, add-ed: “Indian Muslims have not been associated with ter-rorist activities till date and if some of them have started taking part in such activities, then it is really sad for our country.

“India has always been a secular country and Bolly-wood has always advocated

its secular character. A warn-ing by a handful of people will definitely not matter to the industry.” Others refused to talk. Actress Juhi Chawla and choreographer-director Farah Khan, both close as-

sociates of Shah Rukh, de-clined to comment on the threat.

Veteran actress and Saif Ali Khan’s mother Sharmila Tagore did not respond on being contacted either. Shah Rukh also did not react to any calls or messages on the issue.

FASHION

Power dressing goes casual

The formal dress code is fast giving way to a semi-formal and more casual dress code in office spaces. While ex-ecutives are chilling out in their casual chic outfits, fashion designers con-firm that this is a new trend! Agrees designer Puja Nayyar, “Yes, this is a very interest-ing trend. Office goers are managing to look formal despite teaming casual sensibilities in their individual styles. Their dressing style has a sporty edge to it and it is far from being formal. People are managing to look stylish and as a result, they are more comfortable at work. It is no longer the strict suits any-more – it is more like feel good and look better now!” Adding to that is designer Rahul Jain, “I’d call it the comfort trend. And there is one thing that young execs are taking due care of. They are not mixing casual with loungewear or club wear. It is the formal-casual. So you see more shirts and jeans combos, more shirtdresses and leggings in offices. This is important because one can’t afford to look lazy in office. Khakis, drawstring pants and flared skirts give one that holiday feel. So, that should be avoided! It is about looking active at work, so the choice of semi-formals should be such that the garments exude an ac-tive look and keep laziness at bay.” What semi-formal combos do they recommend? “Nice-ly fitted trousers with a polo

neck tee, striped shirts with jeans, straight skirts with semi-formal tops make for good office wear. They are comfortable and yet they

make the person look formal and that is important because it is an office at the end of the day,” says Rahul. Renu Tandon recommends slim-figure trousers with shirts. “Slim-figure trousers

are comfortable, are consid-ered the in-things and you can play with the tops you want to team them with. White and black are ever-

green colours and they are hot this summer too. Also soft pinks are ruling the colour palette and shades of pink are very pleasing to the eye in the sum-mer heat.” Puja says, “Shirt dresses with leggings and extended shirts with leggings are very comfortable. They are ‘breathe easy’ and crisp shirt-dresses give a very formal feeling. It is all about clubbing slick

style with comfort. One could add trainers to that look. Plus, men could exper-iment with a lot with waist-coats, as they are really hot this season. Waistcoats make men look slimmer yet trendy

and the formal touch is maintained. Office wear is getting casual but it remains cutting edge by being more sporty than formal.” And what are the fash-ion faux pas that people should avoid? “One should avoid halters and spaghetti tops in office. There’s some thing not right about them. That’s a no!” says Puja. “A strand of pearls or a nice piece of jewellery is good enough and do not bundle up loads of jewellery. One should learn to accessorise right,” advises Renu. And Rahul says, “Girls should stay miles away from ties. Avoid halter-tops and do not confuse garments. Remember, you need to feel active and that will happen only if you look active!” Happy dressing, people!

Workspaces in India and abroad are seeing a fashion revolution.

TV TALK

Voice of India winner Ishmeet Singh drowns in MaldivesVery few can forget his in-nocent smile and soft voice. Today, though, Ishmeet Singh, the popular winner of a reality singing competition is no more.In shocking news that en-gulfed Ludhiana in a pall of gloom and collective mourn-ing, the budding singer died on Tuesday appar-ently by drowning in Maldives. A blooming ca-reer cut short, the rattled city reacted with disbelief as the news spread like wildfire. Peo-ple from all walks of life -- friends, relatives and fans of the Sardar who had captured the imagination of the nation with his melodious voice - started stream-ing into in to his home at Shastri Nagar, many of them weeping loudly. Only last year the city had run a campaign lobby-ing for the singing sensation. The Sikh community and Punjabis across India and the world voted proudly and unabashedly for him, mak-ing him the eventual winner. Crying profusely, Charanka-mal Singh, his uncle and the

chief strategist of the lobby group then, confirmed his death on phone before snap-ping the connection off. Too shocked to react Gurpin-der Singh, father of Ishmeet, said he doesn’t know any-thing about what happened. Ishmeet’s mother, too shaken to shed a tear, sat quietly be-

fore a TV set relaying news that shattered her. Atamjit Singh, one of the relatives told TOI that they got a call from the CEO of Big Events, hosting a pro-gramme with Ishmeet in Maldives, that he drowned at the beach.

“Ishmeet had gone just this morning to Maldives,” he said. Reports from Colombo said that Singh, 20, had been frolicking in a shallow pool meant for children on Tues-day and later jumped into the deep-end of the main swim-ming pool and had immedi-

ately run into difficulty, an official of the Dhon-veli resort in Maldives said. “We understand that he did not know how to swim and had been ad-vised by his friends not to get to the deep end,” a hotel official said when contacted from Colom-bo. His body was taken to the capital island Male, about half-an-hour by speed boat. He had arrived in the In-dian Ocean atoll nation early on Tuesday to sing at a musical concert on Friday. He had won the Voice of India singing competition organised by the Star television network and shot to stardom in November

last year. Swimming accidents are rare in the Maldivian archi-pelago which is known for snorkelling and diving and exotic reef fish. Maldives is reportedly the most expen-sive tourist destination in South Asia.

The saas of Indian television Apara Mehta who made her debut with Shobhana Desai’s serial Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka will be seen in a cameo in Shobhana’s new show Hamari Devrani. Apara’s working with Shobhana Desai after 10 years

now. Of course it’s just a guest entry where she plays a judge in a couple dance competition in the serial. But Apara’s glad to be a part of the show. She says, “It feels like coming back home. Shobhanaji has always treated me as a younger

sister and I have reciprocated the same love. The best part is here I am playing myself as the judge of a dance competition.” Shobhana has this to say about Apara, “It was a pleasure to work with Apara after almost a decade. I am very happy especially because she made her debut with my serial Ek Mahal... and today she has become a popular television star. However, she remains unaffected by the success she has seen and is still the same at heart.”

Six years and still rocking...KumKumSome shows manage to retain their popularity even after years and Kumkum has managed to do so. It’s been six years that the show started and after the re-birth track, the story seems to have gained momentum once more. To celebrate six years of its completion, the makers of the show decided to have a grand celebration. A special song sequence has been shot for the same that includes a host of actors like Dips-shikha, Pawan Shankar, Gautam Rhode, Angad Hasija, Ali Merchant, Muskaan and Jay Bhanushali will be seen performing on Deewangi from Om Shanti Om. But of course, the celebrations can’t be complete without the lead pair Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi Parmar. Interestingly, even Hussain’s wife Tina will be seen swinging to the tunes with hubby and Juhi Parmar. Now that’s what we call true celebrations!

Nandita comes across as a person of a lot of substance and very articulate and clear in her thought and action, a person with a solid purpose in life. What inspired you to join films? This is a long and very old story. I did my masters in Social Work and I was working with NGOs. It was

completely by accident that I met Deepa Mehta. And one thing led to another. Acting

till today is more like an in-terest, which is the reason I still live in Delhi and not in Mumbai the hub of Bolly-wood film industry. I also do films in different languages, because there are stories and talent in other parts and not just the big cities. What language movies have you done in movies?I have done 10 languages, including Bengali and Mara-thi and I have done 30 filmsIs there a film close to your heart?I would say not yet. Do you think that the artistic environment at home played a role in your decision to go into acting?I think it did help. Films are a collaborative art, like visual and perform-ing art mixing together. So I think growing up in an environment where I watched dance and music performances, watched the-atre and went to exhibitions from a very early age, prob-ably created an aesthetic and artistic sensibility, that has been with me in person and also in the choices I have made. I hardly ever watched any movies when I was younger with my parents, so cinema never really played a big role in my formative years. As a social activist, what are your future endeavors? An activist is a much big-ger term, even though I am called an actor activist. But both things I don’t really do full time. I do it more as a concerned citizen. I am do-ing much more advocacy work. Before I started acting I used to do more grassroots level work. It’s been six years that the show started and after the re-birth track, the story seems to have gained momentum once more. To cel-ebrate six years of its completion, the makers of the show decided to have a grand celebration. Aries: This week’s scenario is highlighted by a headstrong approach and you being rash at times. Wild and daring physical activities, or just plain reckless-ness and impatience, can put you into dangerous situations. You tend to be very abrupt and inconsiderate of others. It’s best for you not to try to cooper-ate or slow down your pace to suit other people too much. You need to follow your own rhythm..

Taurus: This week’s scenario is highlighted by your thin skin and your rath-er sensitive, sometimes overly sensitive nature. You easily become fired up emotionally at this time, especially about people, places, or causes you have a strong attachment to from the past, such as your alma mater or your home town. You care more passionately and respond instinctively and emotionally to whatever happens to you at this time.

Gemini: This week’s scenario is highlighted by a fascination of the mysteri-ous now. Unsolved or puzzling problems and the hidden or behind the scenes aspects of a situation interest you most, and you delve and probe until you discover the truth. An interest in psychology or other peoples’ secrets comes to the fore. You enjoy spy, mystery, and supernatural stories. You feel expan-sive and inclined to take risks, and you may be overly extravagant now.

CANCER: This week’s scenario is highlighted by your need for privacy. Your mood is conservative, quiet, reflective, and philosophical. You are more detached from your daily affairs than usual, and you step back to reflect on the overall course of your life. You are very concerned with your responsi-bilities to important people in your life and you may give a special gift or provide practical assistance to parents, spouse, or children.

Leo: This week’s scenario is highlighted by future thinking! During this time period you may begin planning big things for the future. You become excited about an idea that promises much greener pastures for you. Your enthusiasm and optimism are so strong that it is difficult for you to realistically evaluate the situation. If others question or doubt your plan, you quickly brush their concerns aside, as you pursue a grander vision.

Virgo: This week’s scenario is highlighted by you taking “the bull by the horns”, to quote an old expression, and assertting your own needs and de-sires, to communicate to others what you really want. You are sharp, clear, decisive, and articulate. You can’t stand being idle now; you are ready for challenging, intellectual activities and attacking difficult problems on the job.

Libra: This week’s scenario is highlighted by you realizing that being with people and especially giving something of yourself and your talents to others with benefit you in the long run. However you want to be seen and noticed. You receive appreciation and a positive response and possibly an opportuni-ty or personal contact which will be quite beneficial. There are opportunities for deep sharing and powerful, meaningful contacts with others, especially people who share common goals or ideals.

Scorpio: This week’s scenario is highlighted by a sense of failure, self-doubt, or inability to effectively compete and assert your own will. Stifled anger and resentment over the frustrations and obstacles you confront now may further complicate matters. This is not a good time to begin a new venture, ask for a promotion, or try to expand your activities in any way. Patience and perse-verance are required of you now. Be willing to wait.

Sagittarius: This week’s scenario is highlighted by new inspiration, increased imagination, and rejuvenation of spiritual ideals. Your imagination and intu-ition are very keen now. Whether you are directly involved in these areas or not, you will encounter imaginative works that inspire and uplift you now. Your sense of awe and wonder expands now, allowing you to appreciate life to a greater extent.

Capricorn: This week’s scenario is highlighted by a irrational need to have physical thrills and excitement, and you want to do something new and out of the ordinary. You also have a lot of energy and quick reflexes.Acting on your spontaneous impulses and following through on some of your more unusual or “crazy” desires will yield surprises, mostly positiveimportant and how to best balance all aspects of your life.

Aquarius: This week’s scenario is highlighted by work-related or personal goals which are subject to reevaluation during this period. Your more con-ventional ways and habits may need reconditioning or updating in order to achieve your objectives. Issues of self-worth, confidence, and determination may cause you to neglect important responsibilities at this time. You are apt to put yourself down or compare your talents and skills to other individuals now.

Pisces: This week’s scenario is highlighted by a sense of light heartedness! You use charm, humor, and a light touch to get your point across now, and your friendly attitude makes a favorable impression on others. Serious and demanding mental work should probably be put off for another time, as ei-ther your mind is more on matters of the heart or you simply want to relax and think of lighter topics.

LIFESTYLE

Yoga for Fatigue Physical over-exertion can deplete the body’s energy and cause muscle fatigue. Gentle yoga poses will help to regulate, nourish and re-plenish the energy and mus-cles of the body. The restor-ative poses mentioned above will also provide rest and re-newal to these centers. The poor circulation of blood, oxygen and nutrients can also create fatigue. Yoga’s whole body movements and stretches increase the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients through the body, helping the cells of the body to ac-cess the proper materials for producing energy. Flowing movements and sequences, such as the sun salutations, as well as inversions will be the most effective in improv-ing circulation. A nutrition-ally poor diet can also be the blame of physical fatigue. A yogic diet of simple, fresh, and organic foods will allow the body to easily digest and assimilate all of the proper nutrients that the body needs to produce energy. Overeat-ing should be avoided as this can overtax the digestive system, reducing its ability to assimilate nutrients, mak-ing one feel heavy and slug-gish. Emotional and Energetic Causes While yoga has a strong ef-fect on the physical body, it has an even stronger effect at regulating the emotions and subtle energies of the body. In Traditional Chinese Med-icine (TCM) excessive emo-tions are seen to adversely affect the organ systems responsible for the creation and regulation of prana or qi. In TCM, the Kidneys are seen as the foundation of all of the energy of the body

and act like batteries to store prana for future use. Fear is said to constrain the energy of the Kidneys, causing them to dysfunc-tion and for their energy re-serves to become drained. The Chinese believe the Spleen is responsible for converting the food we eat into energy for the body to use. Excessive worry and over thinking weaken the Spleen’s ability to trans-form nutrients to produce abundant prana, result-ing in fatigue. The Lungs also play a role in produc-ing prana in the body. The Lungs transform the air we breathe into prana and also help circulate this prana in the chest. When excessive sadness or melancholy is present, this function of the Lungs is depressed and this may manifest as fatigue in the body. The Liver in TCM is responsible for the free flow of energy through the entire body. Excessive anger, frustration and ir-ritation all cause the Liver to constrict and stagnate the flow of prana, which in turn can lead to fatigue. The meditative and mind-fulness practices of yoga are excellent tools to bring awareness to our emotional states and to experience and process them completely. Yoga poses can be used to target the Kidney, Spleen and Lung areas to encour-age the release of held emotions and to tonify and regulate these organ energy centers. As the Kidneys are located in the low back, back bending poses are the best to activate the Kidneys and to tonify their prana. Low back bending poses such as Bridge, Cobra, Boat and Bow will be the best targeted for this area. As the Liver and Spleen are located on the sides of the abdomen, side bends and twists will activate these energy centers. Both the meridians of the Liver and Spleen travel down the insides of the legs, so hip opening poses like Pigeon, Bound Angle and Seated Angle will also activate these organ systems. Physi-cal movement helps the Liver in moving the energy through the body, so vinya-sa based sequences like the sun salutations will be ben-eficial as well. To activate and tonify the Lungs, use chest opening upper back bending poses such as fish, camel, sphinx and crab. All regular exercise will re-duce fatigue, but yoga has the unique ability to pro-vide exercise that is multi-dimensional in nature: effecting the body, mind, energy and emotions.

We all have experienced common bouts of fatigue as a normal response to over-exertion, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. This common experience of low energy and/or motiva-tion can usually be allevi-ated through proper rest, exercise, stress reduction and nutrition. Yoga is an es-pecially effective treatment for fatigue as it combines movement, rest and stress reduction with the cultiva-tion of prana (life force en-ergy) and the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and renew re-sponse). The remedy for some cases of fatigue can be quite obvious, while other types of fatigue will require much more self-observation and self-inquiry to find the proper mode of treatment. Yoga is an optimal heal-ing modality for fatigue not only because it addresses the physical, emotional and en-ergetic causes of fatigue, but also because it fosters and fa-cilitates the self-observation and self-inquiry required to understand the roots of this disharmony. Physical Causes While the physical causes of fatigue are the most obvious, they are also the least com-mon. A lack of sleep will certainly cause fatigue, and while getting more sleep is the obvious solution, yoga can also help. Yoga is not a substitute for sleep, but yoga’s calming and regulat-ing effects can help you get a longer and deeper night’s rest. A deep sense of rest can also be experienced from extended holdings of restor-ative poses, such as child, supine bound angle, knee down twist, and shavasana.

BUSINESS NEWSThree private cos allowed to manage provident fund Pension reforms have started. With the Left off its back, the government on Tuesday pushed for reforms and allowed three private sector companies to manage the pension funds with Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The decision ends the 56-year monopoly of the State Bank of India as the sole EPFO fund manager. The EPFO board met, with labour minister Oscar Fernandes in the chair, to take this historic decision. It identified HSBC, ICICI Prudential and Reliance Capital as the three private sector finance companies that would man-age, in addition to SBI, EPFO funds — to the tune of Rs 2.4 lakh crore. Trade union representatives were also present for the meeting, and barring the Congress-affiliated INTUC, they submitted a vote of dissent. The move will save the fund Rs 2.5 crore per annum in fund management fees. At present, EPFO pays Rs 5 crore to SBI. But the new fund managers have quoted lower fees. HSBC quoted the lowest at 0.0063%, followed by ICICI Prudential at 0.0075% and SBI and Reliance Capital at 0.01%. The allocation of fund for the management to the successful bidders, based on the asset management fee, will be decided by the EPFO’s finance and investment committee. Govt got 10 bids for EPFO With private sector companies allowed to manage EPFO, the labour secretary said 10 financial bids were received by the government and four companies have been given the man-date. However, the representatives of AITUC and HMS, D L Sachdev and A D Nagpal, alleged that the name of Anil Ambani group-owned Reliance Capital was added at the last minute. Just HSBC and Prudential Capital had been cleared by the committee, they said.

even as the companies collaborate on production and certain back-end operations. Makham Dhalivaal, newly-appointed India MD of VW Pas-senger Cars, said the VW group companies would be inde-pendent as far as interface with customers was concerned. “All the three brands would have separate sales and service networks and we do not plan to have any co-branded show-rooms. The idea is to retain separate brand identities for all the three brands,” Dhalivaal told TOI. VW has been a late entrant into the Indian market and has appointed only seven dealers since it started operations last year. Skoda, on the other hand, has been in the market since 2001 and has 54 dealerships across the country. Dhalivaal said VW had aggressive plans to ramp up the sales and service network in the country as it also launched new cars, including a small car by 2010. “We plan to expand the dealer network to 120 by the end of 2011 and this would cover the majority of cities that have

an appetite for luxury cars and about 75-80% of the markets where compact and C segment cars dominate,” he said. But just as the group companies do not collaborate on the sales and service front, there would be synergies and coop-eration in other back-end areas, he said. “Certain back-end operations like IT and finance functions would be common,” he said. Also, there would be collabora-tions in terms of logistics with the same network being used to transport cars of various brands across the country,” Dhal-ivaal added. Companies are cooperating on the front of pro-duction of cars. Skoda’s Aurangabad plant is being used by both Audi and VW to assemble some of their models. While Audi assembles the A6 and soon will assemble the A4 too, VW assembles the Passat and Jetta sedans there. However, once VW’s upcoming Chakan plant becomes op-erational in 2009, Skoda would start the production of its hatchback Fabia there, shifting the operations from Aurang-abad.

Singh is Kinng

Singh Is Kinng, the most keenly awaited romantic comedy of 2008, revolves around a gang of crooks

transformed by a good man and his selfless love for a pretty girl… Lakhan Singh aka Lucky (Sonu Sood) is the ‘king’ of the Australian underworld accompanied by his associ-ates (played by Javed Jaf-frey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhan-shu Pande.) Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was

born, there exists someone more notorious than him – Happy Singh (Akshay Ku-mar).

The village is fed up of his magnanimity, which has re-sulted in a number of hilari-ously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they de-cide to send him on a long trip (that will keep him out of the village for a while!) to bring Lucky back to Pun-jab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia. The happy-go-lucky bump-kin, taking his mission a bit

too seriously, embarks on his journey accompanied by his friend, Tony Singh (Om Puri), who hates Happy for

dragging him into it. The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia (Katrina Kaif) with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destina-tion, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady (Kirron Kher) who helps him meet Lucky.

In a strange turn of events, an attempt on Lucky’s life is foiled by a well-intentioned Happy who fights off the attackers by risking his own life. Following the hilari-ous altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed, and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new ‘kinng’! The series of chaos, shocks and comic mis-understandings that en-sue eventually result in redemption and an ac-

Best Kept Secret: At a dinner party, several of the guests were arguing whether men or women were more trustworthy.“No woman,” said one man, scornfully, “can keep a secret.”“I don’t know about that,” huffily answered a woman guest. “I have kept my age a secret since I was twenty-one.”“You’ll let it out some day,” the man insisted. “I hardly think so!” responded the lady. “When a woman has kept a secret for twenty-seven years, she can keep it forever.”

Terrible news !: A man got a call from his doctor who said “I have some bad news and some terrible news, which would you rather hear first?”The man says “The bad news.”The doctor says “The lab messed up your tests and when they re-did them, they found out you only have 48 hours to live!”The man exclaimed “What could be more terrible than that!!??”The doctor replied “we tried all day yesterday to get hold of you but your phone was busy!”

Get Well Soon: A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest.Worried that it might be a second surgery the doctors hadn’t told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down enough so he could look at what was mak-ing him so uncomfortable.Taped very firmly across his hairy chest were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn’t come off easily. Written in large black letters was the sentence.“Get well quick..... from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week.”

Ban plastic bags...: Sam and John were out cutting wood, and John cut his arm off.

Sam wrapped the arm in a plastic bag and took it and John to a surgeon. The surgeon said: “You are in luck! I am an expert at reat-taching limbs! Come back in four hours.”So Sam came back in four hours and the surgeon said: “I got done faster than I expected to. John is down at the local

pub.”Sam went to the pub and saw John throwing darts.A few weeks later, Sam and John were out again, and John cut his leg off. Sam put the leg in a plastic bag and took it and John back to the surgeon. The surgeon said: “Legs are a little tougher - come back in six hours.” Sam returned in six hours and the surgeon said: “I finished early - John is down at the soccer field.”Sam went to the soccer field and there was John, kicking goals.A few weeks later, John had a terrible accident and cut his head off. Sam put the head in a plastic bag and took it and the rest of John to the surgeon. The surgeon said: “Gee, heads are really tough. Come back in twelve hours.”So Sam returned in twelve hours and the surgeon said, “I am sorry, John died.”Sam said: “I understand - heads are tough.” The surgeon said: “Oh, no! The surgery went fine! John suffocated in that plastic bag!”

Peeing Problem: A man walks into his doctor’s office and sits down in the waiting room. While he is waiting his turn to be seen, a casual acquaintance walks in and sits down next to him.The newcomer asks, “W w what are yyy you ddd doing here?”The man replies, “I am waiting to see the doctor.”“W wwhy dd do yyy you wwant to sss see hhim?”The man replies, “Well, if you must know, I have a prostate problem.“A pp prostate ppp problem, wwhat’s ttthat?”“Well, if you must know. House Hunting: 5 Tips to Finding Your Dream Home Buying a home is never an easy task, and once you’re pre-approved, the urgency to buy a home can be over-whelming. Many buyers who are unprepared often end up with a home they’re not absolutely crazy about, and end up moving within a couple of years. But like a glove, there’s a perfect fit for you out there – and you’ll find it, once you know what to look for.

The Interior The most important question to ask yourself is, what do I already own that the new home would need to pro-vide? In other words, what would my new home need to have, whether my old home had it or not? For instance, if you are trading up because your family is growing, your home would naturally have to be bigger to accommodate more people. If you have an existing large dining room and love to entertain, then the new home would also need to have a large dining room. Personal style can also play a role in helping you determine what kind of home you’d be most com-

fortable in – to you, it could mean the difference between a two-storey Victorian or a open-concept loft.

The Exterior Like the interior, personal

style will automatically draw you to the type of home you like. Taking notice of what

kind of homes you are drawn to, and their common ele-ments, will help you narrow down your search.

Your Requirements What features are vital to you

and your roommate/family/pets? How many people are going to live there, and are

there any more expected to arrive or leave? How many parking spaces, home of-fices, bedrooms, or work-shops might you need? Once you’ve decided on these questions, you’ll have a bet-

ter idea of how many rooms your dream house will have, as well as what areas might

interest you.

Your Lifestyle Preferences will also arise once you take note of your lifestyle. Some people en-joy gardening, while oth-

ers would rather go to a park to appreci-ate nice landscaping. Some people like to spend time renovat-ing or decorating their home, others would rather move into a home with little main-tenance. Some en-joy quieter, suburban surroundings. Some like the buzz and at-mosphere of the city. Use your preferences as a guideline for de-termining what neigh-bourhood and type of home best suit your needs. It can also re-fine smaller required details you might have overlooked, such as what type of kitchen or parking you will need.

Questions to Consider Once You Start Looking • What is the visible condi-

tion of the property? • Does the house require ma-jor repairs or replacement? • How old are the mechani-cal systems (i.e. plumbing, electric, heating, A/C)? • Has the house been well maintained? • Where the house located on the block? Is it a corner lot or an interior lot? • What architectural features am I drawn to (i.e. porches, decks, landscaping, paved walkways)? • What are the conditions of the surrounding houses and neighbourhood? • Is it close to the ameni-ties that I need (i.e. grocery, shopping, transit, schools, parks, etc.)?

These questions will help you save time and stress when start looking for a home.
