Video Surveillance for a
Secure and Safe Community
Surveillance cameras are everywhere
• Offices
• Parking lots
• Shopping malls
• Hospitals
• Airports
• Railway stations
• Universities
• Road sides
• Personal residences
But are we really protected?
Recently there seems to be an increase in
terrorist attacks and violence
Does more cameras equal more security?
An example: London Heathrow airport has more
than 5000 security cameras!!
Behind the scene: security control room
It is Impossible to have constant human attention
to such a large number of video streams.
Future surveillance applications
Centralized Surveillance Surveillance From
Handheld Devices
Present Future
Information Technology can make a
difference
New technology and software systems can see,
analyse and generate automatic alerts with
minimum human involvement.
Issue IT Solution
Surveillance application developed at GSIT
GSIT researchers are developing future surveillance applications
for automatic event detection.
How does it work?
• At first, the moving regions (e.g., single person, group of
people, vehicle etc) are separated from the video stream.
• Then their location, area, speed, distance from nearby
regions are analysed for the likelihood of undesirable
events occurring.
Automatic event detection
When any undesirable event is detected, the closest
security officer is automatically notified.
Time
Surveillance from handheld devices
Future possibilities include
monitoring of:
• Your home
• Child care centres
• Aged care facilities
Examples of usage
Incident
Detection
Early
Prevention
Target
Tracking
Scenario: Incident Detection
Automatic detection
of unauthorized
access to secure
places.
Scenario: Early Prevention
Advanced risk analysis
based on past surveillance
history will enable users to
undertake early preventive
measures against potential
malicious activity.
Scenario: Target Tracking
Wide area surveillance
coverage will enable
precise tracking of
terrorists and thieves.
Thank You!
