Kick off Open Bio-Surviellance for Thailand

GeoChat in Mukdahan

• - Be introduced by our partner InSTEDD

• - Mukdahan is one of cross border point be connected to Laos, Vietnam

• - Mukdahan Public Health Office has been developed ICT schema for Bio-Surviellance

GeoChat Workshop in Mukdahan

• Date 12nd - 13rd March 2009

• The objectives

• 1. To develop a model for disease surveillance rapid reporting through SMS.

• 2. To build the volunteer team for disease surveillance rapid reporting in Mukdahan as a pilot area.

• 3. To perform feasibility study of IT disease surveillance report system and the way to improve report system for initial the model of bio surveillance report system in country level and regional level;


• Participants 50 people;

• 1. Volunteer team from Mukdahan Public Health Office

• 2. ICT Team of MBDS, Mukdahan

• 3. Change Fusion /Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Technology team

• Activities

• 1. To present currently system for collect diseases information in MBDS Mukdahan and Savarnakhet.

• 2. To present the work flow of implementation during outbreak

• 3. To introduce and hands-on the GeoChat

• 4. Field exercise on GeoChat

• 5. Summary out come of field exercise

• 6. Develop the action plan for next 6 months


• Outcomes

• 1. Mukhahan had a volunteer team to report and exchange information via SMS,

• 2. 6 months action plan of field volunteer team and keys of evaluation,

• 3.The model of utilize of field work base on Surveillance Rapid Respond Team (SMS volunteer team),

• 4. Success to set SMS local gateway for service the local group,

• 5. Collect the comments of using GeoChat in a field;

• Lessons learned and future direction

• 1. GeoChat has to have the local support unit for implement in each country or regional for convenient to the user groups such as MBDS.

• 2. GeoChat have to do more field test for ensure of utilization in the region.

• 3. In the pilot stage have to select the active local users for test and put the comments for the system such as Mukdahan and Savarnakhet.

• 4. Connect the SMS report to the exist databases and ICT system of MBDS in the future.

• 5. Add more steak holder for report i.e. local media, citizen journalists;

• Standardised SMS format to fit 140 characters for English and 70 characters for complex languages (Thai, Chinese, Lao, Khmer, Burmese etc.)
