• Workforce Investment Act (WIA)– Federally funded program for

job seekers who need occupational skills to successfully re-enter the workforce

– Participants choose from a pre-approved list of training courses

– Programs for Adult and Youth who are 14 to 21

• A company official, three laid-off employees or the local WFC representative can file a TAA petition

• Once the employer is certified; employee’s are eligible to apply for retraining at your local workforce center.

• Use websites for your target industries, employers, geographic region, etc.

• Look for local professional associations.

• Be aware of privacy issues. How easy to access your information?

• Have a reliable way to be contacted.

• Update your resume often to get it on the top of the list of resumes.

• Sit back and wait for a response from a resume you have posted on line. Be pro-active.

• Use unprofessional email address on resume.

• Rely on the internet as your sole job search method.

• Ignore the instructions given on how to submit your resume. This can vary widely.

• Use a common or popular word processing application, such as MS Word

• Avoid using any pre-formatted resume writing packages or wizards

• Use standard fonts and avoid decorative graphics or formatting

• Find out if the employer prefers the cover letter and resume sent within the text of the email or sent separately as an attachment

• Have an additional hard copy version of your resume (enhanced layout and formatting) to bring the interview

• Save your documents under your first and last name instead of just resume.

Electronic scanning systems search for “key words” that match you to the job. If you don’t

include the “key words” they use to search resumes, the hiring person will not even see your resume. Be sure to target your resume to the job description and use their words.

• Always send an original• Bold face and/or all capital letters for section headings• Condensing space hinders scanning• Do not fold or staple• Each phone number on its own line • Fancy treatment like italics should be avoided• Graphics should not be used• Horizontal lines should never be used• Increase your list of key words by including specifics• Jargons and acronyms that are specific to your field • Keep date ranges on one line• Large font sizes should always be avoided• Miscellaneous items such as activities&honors should be listed• Newspaper/Newsletter format should be avoided
