Why is International Travel Important?

International Visitors to the United States Set New Record in 2012

TheUnitedStateswelcomed67mil-lioninternationalvisitorsin2012,arecordlevelofvisitorstotheUnited

States,fourmillionmorethantheyearbe-fore-asevenpercentincreaseover2011.In2012,thetopinboundmarketscontinuedtobeCanadaandMexico.Non-residentvis-itsfromCanadasetarecordwith22.7mil-lionvisitors,up sixpercent. Mexicowassecondwitharecord14.5mil-lionvisits,upeightpercent.TheMexico growth perfor-mance reflected a recoveryfollowingfouryearsofverysmall increasesormoderatedeclines in traveler volume.TheUnitedKingdom(-2%),Japan(+14%),andGermany(+3%) rounded out the topfive.Annualoverseasarrivals(excludingCana-daandMexico)totaled29.8millionduring2012.Overseastravelgrewsevenpercentfortheyear,creatinganewrecordlevelofoverseasvisitsfortheUnitedStates.Travelfrom thesemarkets accounted for 44 per-cent of total arrivals to theUnitedStates,with22ofthetop50overseasmarketsset-tingnewvisitationrecords.

Top inbound countries with the largestincreasesinvisitsin2012were: thePeo-ple’s Republic of China (excludingHongKong)(+35%),Colombia(+21%),Venezu-ela (+20%),Argentina (+20%) andBrazil

(+19%).AllfivecountriessetnewrecordsforvisitstotheUnitedStates.Whilenon-visa waiver countries (led by Brazil, thePeople’s Republic of China (excludingHong Kong), India,Venezuela,ArgentinaandColombia)registeredrecordlevelvisitstotheUnitedStates,visitsfrommostEuro-peanUnioncountrieswereindecline.

In 2012, 14 of the top 20 in-boundvisitormarketspostedincreases in visits, six ac-counted for double-digit in-creasesand12setrecordvis-itstotheUnitedStates.Thetop 20 markets accountedfor 89 percent of all inter-nationalvisits to theUnitedStates, and as a groupwereup seven percent comparedto 2011. The United King-

dom,France,Italy,Spain,theNetherlandsandIrelandwerethesixmarketsoutofthetop20whichexperienceddeclinesfor theyear.

Sixoftheoverseasregionalmarketspostedrecord level visits: Asia, South America,Oceania, theMiddleEast,EasternEuropeandAfricadueinparttonon-residentvisitsfromBrazil,Australia andRussia. VisitsfromJapan,thePeople’sRepublicofChina(excludingHongKong),SouthKoreaandIndiaspurredAsiatoposta15percentin-crease

•Represents 7% of allgoodsandservicesexportsfortheUnitedStates.

•Largest services sectorexport-25%ofservices.

•Generatesatradesurplusof$47billion.

• Supports1.2millionjobs.

• Supports one additionaljob for every 75 interna-tionalvisitorstotheUnitedStates.

•Total employee compen-sation in this sector ap-proaches $223 billion an-nually.
