FALKLAND ISLANDSOften referred to simply as “the Falklands,” these islands are an archipelago in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, located 300 miles from the coast of mainland South America. The capital, Stanley, is located in the East Falklands, while the West and Southeast Falklands are scantily populated wildlife havens.

SouTh ShETLAND ISLANDSThe South Shetland Islands lie just north of the Antarctic Peninsula. Highlights include Half Moon Bay, Penguin and Deception islands, and a visit to a scientific research station. The cruise to these islands includes crossing the breathtaking Lemaire Channel.

DAYS 3–4: Cruising the Drake Passage The southward journey toward Antarctica is an exciting one. An important trade route in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Drake Passage is a 600-mile-wide swath of water where the Southern Ocean currents are squeezed between South America’s southern tip and Antarctica’s northernmost reaches. Its stormy waters and icy conditions often made the journey around Cape Horn a difficult one, though the stabilizer-equipped ‘Le Boreal’ handles it easily. The krill-rich waters of the Drake Passage are a particular favorite with marine mammals and seabirds. To PRESERVE AND PRoTECTThe December 11 departure is dedicated to raising awareness about climate

change and its effects on Antarctica, with special programming, lectures and excursions focused on environmental conservation.

This Classic Antarctica departure is an A&K Philanthropic Journey, developed with Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) to encourage socially and ecologically responsible travel. AKP was founded as a nonprofit over 25 years ago to help preserve natural habitats, support indigenous communities and protect wildlife in all the places we visit — including in fragile Antarctica.

On this journey, named Fighting Climate Change in Antarctica, travel in the company of Dr. James McClintock, noted Antarctic researcher and a long-standing favorite of A&K’s Antarctica programs. Antarctica, a primordial place as extreme as it is fragile, is a key habitat for research into the effects of climate change. There is no better expert to lead this expedition than Dr. McClintock, an endowed university professor of polar and marine biology whose work focuses on the chemical ecology of Antarctic marine invertebrates. He has led over 12 expeditions to the White Continent, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and has a point on land named after him in McMurdo Sound in the Ross Sea.

On board, Dr. McClintock shares how climate change is rapidly influencing marine life on the Antarctic Peninsula, tales of what life is like at an Antarctic research station, his own research and diving adventures in the world’s most frigid waters, and his drug discovery program that recently found an anti-cancer compound in marine invertebrates.Yet the highlight of the Fighting Climate Change in Antarctica journey is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the U.S. Palmer Research Station (conditions permitting). On this unforgettable, specially arranged visit, you meet the scientists during a behind-the-scenes tour and present them with scientific equipment used for climate change research during a special ceremony.

After lunch, join your naturalists on the deck to look for various species of whales and abundant seabirds, all just a taste of the wildlife you will encounter in the days to come. Later in the evening, chat with experts about the wildlife spotted today and discuss the next day’s itinerary. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

DAYS 5–9: AntarcticaAs the Antarctic Peninsula and its offshore islands appear on the horizon, a sense of excitement begins to build. While day-to-day itineraries depend on the weather, water and wildlife conditions, two excursions are carefully planned for each day by the captain and expedition leader. (See page 30 for an example of a day in Antarctica.) Each cruise day begins with an early breakfast. Afterward, venture out in swift Zodiacs — guided by expert drivers and accompanied by lecturers, in groups of no more than 12 guests — to a number of sites, which may include the penguin-filled islands in the South Shetlands of Half Moon, Penguin or Deception; islands off the continental coastline such as Cuverville, Paulet or Vortex; and, weather permitting, the fabled Antarctic Peninsula. ‘Le Boreal’ also plans to sail through Paradise Bay and the Lemaire Channel, referred to as “Kodak Alley” for

its stunning, camera-ready vistas of towering icebergs and deep blue waters. After a morning exploring native species and striking terrain, return to ‘Le Boreal’ for lunch and perhaps some time to relax and scan the wildlife-rich waters that surround you. In the afternoon, set out for the day’s second excursion, which may include a visit to a scientific research station, the remains of turn-of-the-century whaling and sealing stations, a sheltered beach teeming with basking elephant seals or simply circumnavigating colossal icebergs that serve as floating homes to seals and penguins. Return to your cruiser to relax and chat over cocktails in the cozy, comfortable lounge and enjoy dinner in the dining room. Afterward, you may choose to recap the day’s discoveries with your naturalist guides or enjoy time on deck, taking photos in the stunning low light characteristic of Antarctica’s long, ethereal twilight. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

Photo Workshop Series Antarctica through the eyes of a child is a unique experience, one that Young Explorers learn to document through special digital photo workshops, on board and in

the field. Select photos are featured in an Antarctica memory book designed by the young sharpshooters themselves.

Enhanced Field Explorations The highlight of any Antarctic expedition is the time spent in the field, immersed in the environment. During selected landings, Young Explorers enjoy field activities, such

as a hike through fascinating terrain, a special visit with a researcher in the Antarctic or a Zodiac cruise focusing on what they want to see.

Games Galore In case of a rare restless moment on board, ‘Le Boreal’ features a Leisure area, equipped with a Nintendo Wii station and fun video games to play with other Young

Antarctica Scrapbook Throughout the voyage, Young Explorers write, draw and photograph their surroundings through creative activities led by the Children’s Activity Coordinators, who

You also have the opportunity to retrace part of the route taken by Ernest Shackleton during his historic crossing of South Georgia in 1916. Dr. Marco Favero, expedition leader. Marco is affiliated with the University of Mar del Plata in Argentina. He is the current Chairperson of the Advisory Committee for the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP). Marco has worked with Dr. Patricia Silva (see bio) on researching Antarctic ornithology and marine biology, as well as the ecology, conservation and study of relationships between the demography of seabirds and climate change. He and Patricia are also integrally involved in seabird conservation initiatives and activities.

Jannie Cloete, cruise director. A native of South Africa, Jannie has travelled to all seven continents. He has worked as cruise director and expedition leader for over 29 years on board ships large and small, from a mega-liner with 2,500 passengers to a Russian icebreaker bound for the North Pole. This is Jannie’s 10th season welcoming A&K guests to Antarctica.

Larry Hobbs, lecturer on marine biology. A marine mammal biologist and lecturer for more than 35 years, Larry has served as director of the Marine Mammal Tagging Office for the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Department of Commerce and as principal research scientist at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory. In addition to over 20 seasons of leading expeditions in Antarctica, Larry has also led trips in Greenland and Iceland; the Amazon and Orinoco rivers; and in the South Pacific and Indian oceans.

Dr. Jim McClintock, lecturer on climate ecology. Jim is a marine biologist and field ecologist who leads Fighting Climate Change in Antarctica, an A&K Philanthropic Journey (December 11; see page 9 for details). He is an endowed professor of polar and marine biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and has decades of field work in the Antarctic Peninsula in association with UAB and the National Science Foundation. In 1999, a point on the Peninsula was named after Jim in recognition of his explorations. He was selected in 2010 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Polar Research Board to serve on a group to report on the effects of climate change.

Dr. Patricia Silva, lecturer on ornithology. Patricia conducts research with Argentina’s University of Mar del Plata. She is the current editor of the IAATO Save the Albatross Campaign newsletter, focused on the conservation of albatross and petrel in fisheries of the Southern Ocean.

Bob Burton, lecturer on Antarctic history. Bob worked for the British Antarctic Survey as a zoologist and meteorologist, overwintering twice at remote Signy Island. He has also served as director of the Whaling Museum on South Georgia. An Antarctic historian with over 30 books to his name, Bob received the Polar Medal for his research, and a South Georgia cove has been named in his honor.

Russ Manning, naturalist and Zodiac driver. Russ is a veteran of the British Royal Marines. As winter base commander at Signy Island, he was awarded the Polar Medal. For the past 14 seasons, Russ has travelled to Antarctica as a Zodiac driver and naturalist.

Rich Pagen, naturalist and Zodiac driver. Rich began his career in conservation biology as an educator. After receiving a master’s degree from the University of Missouri, he worked as a field supervisor on a study of birds in the Amazon. As a biologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, he has led tagging studies of sea turtle and shark. For the past eight years, Rich has conducted shipboard surveys for seabirds.

Richard Harker, photo enrichment coach. Richard has been a professional photographer for over 20 years, specializing in underwater, wildlife and landscape photography. Richard’s works have appeared in more than a dozen books and magazines, and he is equally comfortable using a state-of-the-art digital SLR and 19th-century large-format field cameras. He joins ‘Le Boreal’ as a photographic expert to give A&K guests tips for capturing memories of their journey, and leads the photography-focused A&K Antarctica departure (January 5; see page 15 for details).

Shore ExcursionsThe experienced A&K expedition team knows just where and when to position ‘Le Boreal’ for maximum access to wildlife and spectacular views. With the exception of days at sea, two shore excursions are planned for each day (weather conditions permitting). Your expedition leader precedes each excursion with a briefing on safety and conditions on shore. Board your Zodiac — sturdy, motorized rubber boats — with a group of no more than 12 guests, and head to shore. While on the Zodiacs, you are in the capable hands of A&K’s seasoned drivers, each boasting (on average) over 17 years’ experience navigating Southern Ocean waters.

On shore, activities vary depending on terrain, but expect your expert guides to explain and demystify every sight you see. Encounter wildlife from just a few feet away, ready subjects for your camera. In the Falkland Islands, hike for better views of a thousand-strong penguin colony. On South Georgia, visit Sir Ernest Shackleton’s gravesite in the company of a historian with lifelong experience in the great explorer’s life. MEET THE NATIVES

The Southern Ocean’s stunning scenery is home to equally extraordinary, unique wildlife. Below are a few of the creatures you will get to know on your visit.

Gentoo PenguinGentoos sport brightly colored bills and feet. They measure between 20 and 36 inches tall and are the fastest underwater swimmers. They are frequently spotted in the summertime with their chicks on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Humpback WhaleThe humpback’s distinctive features include long pectoral fins, a knobby head and formidable length (about 53 feet). Known for breaching and slapping the water, these gentle giants feed in polar waters during the summer months.

Wandering AlbatrossWith an average wingspan of 11.5 feet, these birds can glide for hours at a time. (In fact, they never flap their wings mid-air.) The AKP-sponsored Save the Albatross project is devoted to helping save these magnificent seabirds from dying needlessly on long-line fishing hooks.

Elephant SealThis is the world’s largest seal — the Southern elephant can be over 20 feet in length and weigh up to 8,800 pounds. Their name stems from the appendage resembling an elephant’s trunk on the males’ heads, which they use to produce a “roar” during mating season.

King PenguinThis regal bird is the second-largest penguin species, reaching a height of up to 30 inches. Adults boast black heads and vivid-orange ear patches, while chicks sport brownish down. Around 100,000 king penguin call South Georgia Island home.

Rockhopper PenguinRockhoppers — the smallest Antarctic penguins — bear striking features, including a black forehead, red eyes and bright-yellow eyebrows. They nest in the Falklands, with chicks hatching in mid-December through January.

Early this morning, with a cup of coffee in hand, we stepped out onto our private deck. Our butler had just dropped off a warm, hearty breakfast, which we savored while watching ice floes float by. We were entering the ice-choked Weddell Sea, and we were glad to see it from our own balcony in the soft morning light. A couple of hours later, we heard that our eagle-eyed expedition team had spotted the rarest sight at these upper latitudes: emperor penguins.

Back on board, we warmed up with a cup of tea and learned that none of our expedition team members — who boast 215 collective years of experience in the region — had ever seen all the Antarctic penguin species on one trip. We reminisced about having spotted the world’s largest iceberg a few days ago and marveled at our good fortune of experiencing such special, once-in-a-lifetime sights.

We layered up, boarded our sturdy Zodiacs and navigated through the brash ice in search of the emperors, sight of which would complete our penguin “grand slam” — seeing all eight Antarctic species. Before long, we were slowly cruising amid the largest penguins in the world as they rested on flat-topped ice floes, and marveling at the surreal scenery of sea ice peppered with looming icebergs.

Yet thanks to the A&K expedition team’s quick thinking and deep knowledge, our afternoon excursion was diverted last-minute to the rarely visited Danger Islands, typically unreachable because of sea ice but accessible today, given weather and geographic conditions. We pulled ashore to a natural spectacle none of us would ever forget: an estimated 300,000 breeding pairs of Adélie penguins, the largest colony of this species in Antarctica. Many of us spent our time here on the beach just watching these birds, as mothers fed their chicks and groups hunted for fish. Some of us walked around taking photos of the stunning scenery and the cacophonous colony, while others strolled alongside our on-board scientists and naturalists for hands-on lessons that never failed to surprise and inform.

The ride back to the ship was smooth. After warming up with a soothing shower, we gathered for the day’s recap and later joined our fellow shipmates in the bar, where storytelling and laughter filled our early evening. After a gourmet dinner, some of us lapped the outer deck as the ship proceeded north to the open waters of the Bransfield Strait and tomorrow’s new adventure.

We passed the lunch hour on deck soaking in the sun and savoring a delicious, freshly prepared barbecue spread as ‘Le Boreal’s’ musicians played lively songs. Most of us ate on the pool deck so we didn’t miss any wildlife sightings or the astounding views surrounding us. As lunch drew to a close, a call came from the bridge that a large group of humpback whales was feeding up ahead. We quickly grabbed cameras and binoculars and made our way to watch the show.

Sitting and enjoying that day’s first glorious cup of coffee, staring out the window and enjoying the conversation around the table at breakfast, you could not imagine another day comparing to the excitement of yesterday. The thrill we felt watching fin whales breach and the magic of minke whales dancing below the water’s surface seemed singular and not to be repeated. However, we were soon proven wrong by the Southern Ocean.

It did not take long for the excitement of our day to begin. Within minutes of ornithologist Patricia Silva beginning her lecture, “Birds in Tuxedos: Why Do They Look So Different?” in The Theatre, she was interrupted by Captain Marchesseau again calling over the ship’s speakers for our third whale sighting of the trip! Ahead of ‘Le Boreal’ were a group of humpback whales.

Captain Marchesseau positioned the vessel to provide the best viewing possible to all gathered on the outer decks. Explaining their behavior over the ship’s speakers, marine biologist Charley Wheatley mentioned spy hopping, pectoral slapping and a behavior we hoped to see: bubble feeding. Although we were unable to see the latter, we spent the next hour glued to these huge and graceful creatures going about their business as if they were putting on a show. In fact, we watched so long that Patricia was unable to continue her lecture.

With South Georgia just over the horizon, the Expedition Team needed to take care of a few things to make sure that we were properly prepared for the journey, beginning with a mandatory briefing with our Expedition Leader Larry Hobbs. Afterward, Cruise Director Jannie Cloete announced a slight change to our afternoon’s schedule to allow for Patricia to finishing her much-anticipated lecture on penguins. Eagerly we joined her in The Theatre for her grand finale.

The next step in our preparations for arriving in South Georgia tomorrow was to make sure all of our outer gear was clean. On the Marina Deck aft, naturalists Pete Clement, Russ Manning and Chris Srigley and marine biologist Charley Wheatley were available to help us make sure our boots were scrubbed and clear of any organic matter that may have been brought along from the Falkland Islands or from home. In reception, naturalists Suzana Machado D’Oliveira Harker and Jen Clement and ornithologist Patricia Silva made sure all the Velcro straps and our pockets were clear of the same. With warming temperatures in these parts of the world, anything that might be introduced as an alien species could wreak havoc in such a fragile ecosystem.

While we scrubbed boots and made sure our gear was clean, Captain Marchesseau had pulled ‘Le Boreal’ alongside Shag Rocks, a seamount two-thirds of the way between the Falklands and South Georgia. Rising from the ocean floor to hundreds of feet above sea level, these rocks create an ocean oasis for the creatures that call this place home. The closer the ship approached, the more abundant the wildlife became. Once again, not to disappoint, a southern right whale appeared on our starboard side. Another gift, on another wonderful day at sea.

Although he had introduced himself during our first night on board, we were not aware of how lucky we were to have historian Bob Burton onboard. As we joined him in The Theatre for his talk, “The Island of South Georgia: The Jewel in the Crown,” we listened intently. The more information he gave us the more we realized how integral a person Bob is in what we see today. With a gift of gab unmatched, Bob built our excitement of the coming days to the point of unbearable. Tomorrow morning, as early as we would need to wake up, could not come soon enough.

Like an oasis in the desert, South Georgia began to rise from the depths of the ocean as ‘Le Boreal’ made its approach. What started as a tiny speck on the horizon soon became a mountain range covered in glaciers, like it had been sliced out of the Alps and dropped in the sea.

By the time we were sitting down for our breakfast, Captain Marchesseau had dropped anchor just off our morning’s destination, Salisbury Plain. Salisbury Plain is home to a king penguin colony said to be 60,000-plus breeding pairs strong and, from this vantage point, possibly as many fur seals. By 6:30 a.m., the Expedition Team had the Zodiacs in the water and were headed to shore to scout it out while we finished our breakfast.

After two days at sea and five in total onboard, we could hardly wait to finally get our chance to board the Zodiacs and head to shore. We loaded the boats from the Marina Deck guided by the crew of ‘Le Boreal.’ Their expertise evident, we quickly shed any nervousness we may have had.

Approaching shore, our drivers explained that due to the swell on the beach this morning we would be doing stern landings. This meant reversing the Zodiacs into shore while staff onshore, in chest waders and dry suits, came out into the surf to catch us.

So many times already had we heard the Expedition Team talk about South Georgia; mention its abundance of wildlife and its beauty. Yet nothing could have prepared us for what we found once ashore. As far as the eye could see in either direction along the beach, fur seals and king penguins mingled, while skuas and giant petrels flew overhead and mingled as well. And the orchestra sounds and smell! Suffice it to say that it is difficult to put into words what we were experiencing in person.

It seemed as though we had only been onshore mere minutes before it was time for us to return to the landing site. The winds had begun to blow and the surf was picking up as the Zodiac

drivers surfed their way into shore on the waves before they took a full boat back to the ship.

Back onboard we joined the Expedition Team in The Theatre for a briefing on tomorrow’s activities before another wonderful lunch served by the galley team. As we ate, the winds continued to blow as the swell increased and wet snow began to fall. We wondered out loud what the chances would be of getting out in the Zodiacs again.

As ‘Le Boreal’ made its final approach into Elsehul, although windy and raining quite hard, the thought was everything would go as scheduled. Unfortunately, as Captain Marchesseau dropped anchor and positioned the ship for operations, it became evident that the swell coming onto the Marina Deck was much too dangerous. With that, our Zodiac tour was canceled and the anchor heaved. Before the anchor had been completely stowed, however, alternative plans were already made and Larry announced we would be heading to Right Whale Bay, just a short steam back to the east.

With a shortened amount of time available because of our delay earlier, we headed out into Right Whale Bay for a 45-minute Zodiac tour. The beaches were lined with even more fur seals than we had seen at Salisbury Plain! Every bit of free space was filled to capacity with pups, females and fighting males. We were extremely interested to see how high up the slopes in the tussock grass we could see seals, some one hundred feet or more up the slope.

After a cheerful round of holiday carols in the Grand Salon with the Expedition Team, we gathered for our special Christmas dinner in La Licorne. We couldn’t have ended such a perfect day in any better way.

A brisk wind greeted us when we stepped out on deck. Captain Marchesseau had found some shelter from the ocean swell on the west side of Bleaker Island, but the wind continued to howl. Expedition Leader Larry Hobbs and Assistant Expedition Leader Dr. Marco Favero took a Zodiac ashore to scout the landing, and found a protected spot where we could land and get ashore on Bleaker Island. So we bundled up for the wind and sea spray we might experience on the blustery Zodiac ride in.

Bleaker Island is long and thin (never more than two miles wide), and extremely low-lying. Most of it is less than 40 feet in elevation, and its spectacular coastline is a mix of gorgeous sandy beaches and low rocky headlands. From the landing, we hiked past Magellanic penguins peeking out of the tussac grass to a very large blue-eyed shag colony in the middle of a grassy meadow. Several thousand pairs of cormorants were perched upon their columnar nests, busily regurgitating food for their hungry chicks, which were at this point of the season already nearly the same size as the adults. An array of predators ranging from skuas to dolphin gulls flew over the colony or perched on its outskirts, awaiting any opportunity to secure their next meal.

Further along, the trail dropped down to the other side of the island, where a rocky platform hosted several sub-groups of nesting rockhopper penguins. It struck us as amazing that a rockhopper penguin can exit the water on such a rough and exposed stretch of rocky coast and, one hop at time, ascend the steep slippery rock face to the top. The penguin chicks were balls of fuzz, with brown downy feathers on their heads and backs, and white downy feathers lining their fronts. They lazily napped, or huddled with other penguin chicks in small groups called crèches, awaiting the return of their parents. Groups of young shags gathered on the rock ledges as well, while gleaming white snowy sheathbills wove in and out looking through the guano on the rock for partially digested morsels of goodness to eat.

We walked back across the island to the landing, from where we enjoyed an exhilarating ride amid wind and waves back to the ship. While we shared stories over lunch, Captain Marchesseau repositioned ‘Le Boreal’ to the east side of Bleaker Island, which we were to explore this the afternoon.

Soon we were back on the Zodiacs heading directly toward a brilliant sandy beach, where the water just offshore glowed turquoise as the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. Groups of penguins lounged above the high tide line, and we walked past the Magellanic penguin burrows, which seemed to go on forever. Walking further up the hill, we encountered clusters of gentoo penguins with their very large chicks. Gentoo penguins lay two eggs, and in a year with ample food, both chicks will fledge. We observed numerous feeding chases, where an adult ran through the colony with two huge hungry chicks in hot pursuit. Often, these chases resulted in the chicks crashing into one another or into another penguin that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We spotted a lone king penguin loafing amid a group of gentoos, as well as many pairs of skuas carefully guarding their tiny tan-colored chicks. Soon we were back down on the beach, and boarding Zodiacs for the ride back to the ship. After watching ‘Le Boreal’ make its passage out to the east, we stopped in one of the bars for a drink, before heading to our first Expedition Recap of the voyage. Naturalist and Falkland native Pete Clement answered questions about life growing up in the Falklands, and geologist Jason Hicks spoke about the recent discovery of an offshore oil deposit just north of the Falklands. Following dinner, we retired for a quiet evening at sea onboard ‘Le Boreal.’

Well rested from a good night sleep, we socialized over scrambled eggs before embarking on what was to become a day of learning and wildlife watching. The first lecture of the day, “Fur-lined, Web-footed Wonders of the Antarctic: An Introduction to the Seals of the Southern Ocean,” was presented by marine biologist Charley Wheatley. Charley gave us an excellent introduction to the elephant seals and fur seals (both of which are spotted more frequently in the Antarctic), as well as to the “ice seals,” which are truly at home in and around the ice. Particularly interesting was the fact that elephant seals dive for 90 minutes to depths of over 5,000 feet, and that more than 80% of crabeater seals have scars from encounters with leopard seals and orcas when they were young.

After the lecture, we stepped outside to greet the day head on, and to join the Expedition Team in scanning for seabirds and whales. A minke whale was briefly spotted, but the seabirds were most definitely the stars of the show. Several giant petrels followed us resolutely, and gave us several close passes so we could see the color of their bill tips and accurately determine which of the two species (northern or southern) were in attendance. Their decision to follow us was tied to their hope that our ship’s propellers would stir up some food or that we would turn out to be a fishing vessel that might discard fish parts overboard. Their latter assumption was erroneous, but on several occasions the petrels settled down on the water in our wake, picking at something appetizing that had apparently come up to the surface behind us.

After sipping lattes in the Grand Salon, we headed back to The Theatre for a presentation by geologist Jason Hicks entitled, “Gondwana: The Origins of Antarctica.” Jason gave a detailed overview of the geologic processes involved in the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates, using the San Andreas Fault in California, and the hotspots of Iceland and the Hawaiian Islands as obvious

examples of these processes in action. He then focused in on how these processes, small changes taking place over a very long period of time, caused the breakup of the former supercontinent of Gondwanaland and resulted in the formation of the Antarctic continent, in its current location at the bottom of the world.

Following lunch, each of us had to confront the difficult and deeply personal decision whether to go exercise in the gym, or to take a nap. Judging by the near-empty gym, most everyone was evidently well rested for deck time with the Expedition Team come mid-afternoon. And good thing, as fin whales were in the area, and we needed as many eyes on deck as possible to spot the next whale blow. Fin whales are the second largest whale in the world (after the blue whale), and one of the fastest. They spend the austral summer in these productive waters feeding on the abundant fish and krill. The railings on the pool deck were lined with red parkas as we all scanned ahead of the ship for the next blow.

We then met photo coach Richard Harker in The Theatre for his presentation entitled, “Photographing Antarctica: Taking Charge of Your Digital Camera.” Richard went into detail on many of the features of today’s digital cameras, including concepts like histograms and exposure compensation, which would help us greatly in capturing Antarctica in photos.

Over cocktails, we met the Expedition Team in The Theatre for a Recap, during which historian Bob Burton told us the many virtues of tussac grass. Marine biologist Charley Wheatley followed by introducing us to the Antarctic Convergence, the boundary between warm temperate water and icy cold Antarctic water, which we would be crossing during the night. Some of us listened to some live piano music in the bar after dinner to wrap up what had been be a very relaxing, educational and eventful day.

ITINERARIES: Accommodations including vessels and arranged sightseeing are subject to change at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or circumstances beyond Abercrombie & Kent’s control. Every effort will be made to operate itineraries as planned, but alterations may occur after the final itinerary has been issued. A&K also reserves the right to withdraw a program or any part of it, to make such alterations to the itinerary or the program inclusions as it deems necessary or desirable, and to pass on to tour members any expenditures or losses caused by delays or events beyond its control.

SPECIAL REQUESTS: Specific requests such as adjacent or connecting rooms, bedding requests, smoking rooms and special dietary needs should be advised at time of booking. Please note that every effort will be made to secure a special request; however, it cannot be guaranteed in advance of travel.

PRICES AND ARRANGEMENTS: Quoted program prices include planning, handling and operational charges and are based on current rates of exchange, tariffs and taxes as of July 2012. A&K reserves the right to increase program prices to cover increased costs, tariffs, taxes and V.A.T. received after prices are published and to reflect fluctuations in foreign exchange markets. A&K is under no obligation to give a breakdown in costs involving any Escorted Group, Signature or Tailor Made program. Modification of program content to accommodate a smaller group size will not affect the published program price. Early Booking Discount rates are based on double occupancy bookings only, are not valid for single bookings, are subject to availability and may be discontinued at any time prior to the published expiration date.

IMMEDIATE CHECK-IN: On programs where immediate check-in has not been included in the program price, A&K has requested that all hotels provide the service when possible; however, it cannot be guaranteed. Most hotels allow check-in to take place during the mid-afternoon. Should you wish to have a guaranteed room ready for your immediate check-in upon arrival, it can be arranged for an additional charge. Please ask A&K for details and prices.

EARLY ARRIVAL: A&K recommends that you arrive a day or two before the start of your planned program to allow time to relax and refresh after your journey. To prepare for the start of your tour, A&K has negotiated favorable overnight rates at many hotels; please ask for details at time of booking. Departing early from the U.S. and Canada during the winter months might be recommended, due to possible flight disruptions and cancellations caused by inclement weather. Please ask your travel consultant for details.

ACTIVE ELEMENTS: Some active elements have been incorporated into select itineraries. To enjoy the trip as intended, a minimum level of fitness is required. A&K will require notice if any participant has any physical or other condition or disability that could create a hazard to him or herself or to other members of the group. A&K reserves the right to decline acceptance of anyone whom it considers unsuitable due to fitness level. A&K also reserves the right to remove from the trip, at the participant’s own expense, anyone whose condition is such that it could create a hazard to him or herself or others, or otherwise impact the enjoyment of other passengers. SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED ANY CLARIFICATION ABOUT A SPECIFIC PROGRAM, PLEASE ASK FOR DETAILS AT TIME OF BOOKING.

A&K’S PASSENGER TRAVEL PROTECTION PLAN: Our specially designed travel protection plan, which provides cancellation coverage, medical coverage and protection against lost or damaged luggage, is not included in the program price and is strongly recommended. Due to Antarctica’s remote location, A&K requires proof of a minimum of $50,000 per person in emergency evacuation/repatriation insurance. This minimum amount is included in A&K’s travel protection plan (please see page 37 for more details); upgrades can be purchased for higher coverage on request. If you do not purchase the A&K travel protection plan, we will require proof of alternative coverage. PLEASE NOTE: Emergency evacuation insurance provides for covering the cost associated with emergency evacuation and repatriation up to the limits of the respective policy; however, it does NOT guarantee the timing, method or mode of such evacuation and repatriation, which is subject to weather and other conditions or variables outside of A&K’s control.

CHILD POLICY: On non-family A&K escorted group programs, unless otherwise indicated on the individual tour, a minimum age of 10 years is required. On the December 21 family departure, a minimum age of 7 is required. Special rates for December 21 family departure apply for children ages 7-18 travelling with full-fare paying adult passenger(s). Some terms and conditions apply; please call A&K for full details. PLEASE NOTE: A&K RESERVES THE RIGHT TO MARGINALLY EXCEED THE PUBLISHED MAXIMUM GROUP SIZE ON FAMILY PROGRAMS TO ACCOMMODATE A FAMILY.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS: Valid passports are required for all international destinations. It is recommended that you check with A&K and the U.S. Department of State web site for the latest passport and visa requirements. Please note that non-U.S. passport holders are responsible for obtaining the required documentation applicable for entry. Passports must be valid for six (6) months after the return of your journey and should also have sufficient blank pages for visas and immigrations stamps. A&K cannot be held responsible should you be denied entry to a country due to non-compliance with these requirements. A copy of your valid passport must be submitted to A&K in order to confirm air reservations.

ARGENTINA RECIPROCITY FEE: U.S. citizens are required to pay a reciprocity fee of $140, payable in cash or by credit card; this one-time charge is good for the life of the passport. (Reciprocity fee as of July 2012 and subject to change.)

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE: A deposit of $2,450 per person is required at the time of booking. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. If your reservation is made within 120 days of departure, the entire cost of the trip must be paid at the time of the request in order to secure confirmation.

CANCELLATION CHARGES: Cancellations received by A&K 120 days or more prior to departure will be subject to a $500 per person/per tour cancellation fee; 119–90 days prior to departure will be subject to 20% of the program price; 89–60 days prior to departure will be subject to 50% of program price; 59 days or less will be subject to

100% of program price. A 100% cancellation charge applies to internal air cancelled less than 90 days prior to departure, where applicable.

CANCELLATION CHARGES FOR EXTRA SERVICES: Additional hotel nights and other extra services booked in connection with A&K programs are subject to the following: Cancellations received 31 or more days prior to the service will be refunded in full; cancellations received 30–15 days in advance will be charged 50% of the price; and cancellations received less than 15 days in advance will be charged 100% of the price.

EXCEPTIONS: Payment and cancellation terms and conditions for all Signature and Tailor Made programs, Extensions, Internal Air and Tailor Made Portfolio Hotels may vary from those noted above. Please ask A&K for details.

AIR TRANSPORTATION: International airfares are not included in program pricing. Abercrombie & Kent USA, LLC, has special agreements with many carriers and can offer quotations from any gateway. Please ask your tour consultant about our special fares. All international and internal air quotes are subject to change and can carry penalties and surcharges until final payment has been received by A&K. Flight confirmation is based on availability. Air reservations cannot be confirmed until a passport copy is received by A&K. PLEASE NOTE THAT CERTAIN AIRFARES ARE SUBJECT TO A SERVICE FEE.

Airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board their planes or conveyances. These programs may use the services of any IATA carrier. International air carriers are subject to international air conventions limiting their liability. The limitations of liability are contained on the reverse side of the airline ticket or e-ticket receipt, or on the carrier’s web site, and form part of the terms and conditions of this package. The passage contract in use by these companies, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the companies and the purchaser of these travel programs and/or passage.

BAGGAGE: Abercrombie & Kent provides handling of two pieces of baggage per person. Weight restrictions on some routes on internal/domestic flights may apply; details will be provided with pre-tour documentation. Baggage and personal effects are at the owner’s risk throughout the travel program, and A&K assumes no liability for lost or damaged baggage. Please check with your international carrier for other baggage restrictions applicable to your international flights.

CLAIMS AND REFUNDS: Refunds are not made for any missed services, except for verifiable extenuating circumstances. Please see our LIMITS ON ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S RESPONSIBILITY clause below. For verifiable claims to be considered, they must be received in writing within 30 days of the termination of the program and be accompanied by supporting documentation and/or a statement from the local destination company verifying the claim. Any adjustment considered will be based on the actual price of the services involved and not on a per diem basis. Adjustments will not be made for unused sightseeing trips or meals. A&K will not accept any liability for any claims that are not received within 30 days of the termination of your travel program. All claims for days missed while travelling should be made in writing within 30 days of the termination of the program.

PHOTOGRAPHY DURING TRAVEL: Abercrombie & Kent reserves the right to take photographs during the operation of any program or part thereof and to use them for promotional purposes. By booking a program with A&K, program members agree to allow their images to be used in such photographs. Program members who prefer that their images not be used are asked to identify themselves to their Tour Director at the beginning of their program.

LIMITS ON ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S RESPONSIBILITY: Abercrombie & Kent, USA, LLC, its employees, shareholders, officers, directors, successors, agents and assigns (collectively A&K), does not own or operate any entity which is to or does provide goods or services for your trip. It purchases transportation (by aircraft, coach, train, vessel or otherwise), hotel and other lodging accommodations, restaurant, ground handling and other services from various independent suppliers (including from time to time other affiliated Abercrombie & Kent companies). All such persons and entities are independent contractors. As a result A&K is not liable for any negligent or willful act of any such person or entity or of any third person.

Terms & Conditions


In addition and without limitation, A&K is not responsible for any injury, financial or physical loss, death, inconvenience, delay or damage to personal property in connection with the provision of any goods or services whether resulting from but not limited to acts of God or force majeure, illness, disease, acts of war, civil unrest, insurrection or revolt, animals, strikes or other labor activities, criminal or terrorist activities of any kind, overbooking or downgrading of services, food poisoning, mechanical or other failure of aircraft or other means of transportation or for failure of any transportation mechanism to arrive or depart on time.

There are many inherent risks in adventure travel of the type involved here, which can lead to illness, injury, or even death. These risks are increased by the fact that these trips take place in remote locations, far from medical facilities. Passenger assumes all such risks associated with participating in this trip.

TRAVEL ADVISORIES AND WARNINGS: It is the responsibility of the traveller to become informed about the most current travel advisories and warnings by referring to the U.S. State Department’s travel web site at travel.state.gov or by phone at 888 407 4747. In the event of an active State Department Travel Warning against travel to the specific destination location(s) of the trip, should the traveller still choose to travel, notwithstanding any travel advisory or warning, the traveller assumes all risk of personal injury, death or property damage that may arise out of the events like those advised or warned against.

ARBITRATION AGREEMENT: Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to these TERMS AND CONDITIONS, to the LIMITS ON ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S RESPONSIBILITY clause, to the brochure, to any information relating in any way to the trip, to the trip itself, or to any products or services related to the trip, shall be settled solely and exclusively by binding arbitration in Chicago, Illinois, in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that (a) in lieu of a personal appearance at arbitration, the arbitration may be conducted by telephonic means, (b) arbitration is the exclusive forum for dispute resolution (no court actions), and (c) except as otherwise provided by statute, each party shall bear its own costs and expenses and an equal share of the arbitrator and administrative fees.

TRAVELLERS REPRESENTATIONS: The traveller represents that neither he nor she nor anyone travelling with him or her has any physical or other condition or disability that could create a hazard to himself or herself or other members of the tour. A&K reserves the right to decline to accept anyone on a trip, and to remove from the trip, at his or her sole expense, anyone whose condition is such that he or she could create a hazard to himself or others, or otherwise impact the enjoyment of other passengers on the trip.
