General Information Capital : Amsterdam Currency : Euro Language : Dutch is the national language of Holland. However, English is spoken by almost everyone. In addition, many Dutch people speak German and French. Climate : Amsterdam's climate is mild but changeable year-round. January and February are the chilliest months, with temperatures usually between 30 F/-1 C and 40 F/4 C. Though often windy, it's rare for Amsterdam to get any snow or for the canals to freeze. June-August is warm but generally not hot: Temperatures rarely exceed 80 F/27 C and can get as cool as 50 F/10 C.

To and From the Airport :

Airport : Schiphol Airport located 14km south-west of the city

The bus : Several regular bus services run from the airport to the city throughout the day Connexxion runs a half-hourly shuttle-bus, which goes directly to several of Amsterdam's major hotels All buses run from stop A7 outside Schiphol Airport

The taxis : Can be caught from the front of the airport (follow exit signs) more expensive (from approx. EUR35) and slower than the trains more convenient for people with lots of baggage or children Amsterdam city is a half-hour car journey away along the A4/E10 highway

Buy your tickets for the sneltrein, stoptrein or TGV in and around Holland and other major European cities at one of the NS (National Spoorwagen) counters or machines

The strippenkaart : cheapest travel option buy a strippenkaart from stations, kiosks, post offices or tourist information points costs from EUR1.60 for two strips to EUR19.20 for 45 strips, with each journey costing a strip plus a strip for each zone you travel in. For example, a zone one trip costs two strips (one for the trip and one for the zone) works on all forms of public transport for multiple journeys must stamp it each time you undertake a journey

TheTrams : excellent way of getting around the city With just 17 lines they are easy to navigate on short acquaintance and are excellent for sightseeing Tram 20 is a special circle trip for tourists, which passes most of the museums and sights, and travels as far south as the Sarphati Park before looping back to the centre Ordinary tickets & passes can be used on tram and are available onboard.

• De Bijenkorf - Amsterdam's most prestigious department store for all manner of goods, from designer and high street clothing to fine foods

• The Jordaan district is slightly more personable. The area has more small independent shops and is interspersed with canals and picturesque squares
