Porto Cenário Bar.

AddressR. do Monchique 684450-394 PortoPortugal

. This project concerns the conversion of a small 50m2 restaurantinto a Lounge Bar, at the riverside front in Porto, Massarelos. Plastered stucco boards were placed around the walls, hangingover a contrasting dark wooden floor. The customer’s area wasseparated from the services and supporting spaces such as thesanitary, the kitchen and the DJ cabin, installed in half of theformer restaurant kitchen. After all, the DJ is the new cokingmaster over here. These “fleshy” spaces got moulded in orangejuicy colours, contrasting with the white/beige painted mainroom. The relation with the beautiful outside landscape wasimproved by emphasising the presence of the 4 existing windowsas absences in the walls, inviting for contemplation. The lightingas well the furniture was carefully chosen, out of vintage stores,in order to fulfil the client’s will of spending few and creating anatmosphere that could be cosy, slightly minimalistic andsophisticated at the same time.

. After Porto was selected one of the 2 cultural capitals of Europein 2001, an international competition started, for a new concerthall to be positioned in the historical centre. The shape directlyderived from ‘programmatic-piling-up’. Two shoe-box concerthalls were piled first, the other public programs were added ontothe shoe-boxes and the ‘remaining’ spaces between the publicfunctions were filled up with secondary serving spaces, such asfoyers, restaurant, terraces, technical spaces and verticaltransport. A continuous route connects all functions and‘remaining spaces’ by stairs, platforms and escalators: thebuilding becomes an architectural adventure. The loop createsthe possibility to use it for festivals with simultaneousperformances. Wave-like corrugated glass is used in both the1300 seat grand auditorium and its smaller 350 seat counterpart.Through material transparency each space reveals its contents tothe city; showing an array of performances and cultural events.

The only solid boxes are the two service-zones inside, one for the bar, and the other for sanitary services. The pavilionseems to hover above the ground on a small raised platform. . The School of Architecture of Porto articulates along the limits ofan ancient farm right next to the Douro river, creating a widecentral space, like an interior square, surrounded by the builtvolumes. This intervention reveals a lot of sensibility with thesurroundings, in communication with the river and the sea. Stairs and ramps distribute the various accesses to the differentlevels and functional zones. The apparent fragmentation of thebuild volumes, visible on the project drawings, recovers itscontinuity in the circulation at the inferior level.

Bouça Housing Complex.

AddressRua da Boavista 4100 PortoPortugal

. This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL inPorto to create social housing for poor people. And even thoughit was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managedto create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting. In 1977 there where only two blocks completed. Nowadays, in2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given tothis complex. Instead of having only poor people living here, thelow prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects andyoung couples to settle in. With four levels, each block presentan articulation in terms of passages that connect the wholecomplex. Together with the housing units there is alsocommercial spaces and green open spaces.

. Gosho Restaurant ('Imperial Palace') is located in the food courtof a 5-star hotel. The project contains several specific areas forthe several types of Japanese food that the restaurant serves, with a total capacity of 101 seats. The atmosphere of therestaurant cherishes 'being' in public, through different themes.Besides evoking traditional Japanese architecture through a crudeand strong presence of the materials, the design createstheatricality with two entrance tunnels and a raised arrival, underlines with white paint the amusing and seemingly irrationalposture of the existing structure and nourishes a certain mysteryby dissolving the space limits with a permeable curtain, atranslucent screen and dark periphery walls (text from architect'swebsite).

. The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formalexpression of Eduardo Souto de Moura. A change of style thatapproaches this work to the formal expression of the architectureof Siza Vieira. This building pretends to be similar to thesurrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on theplot. . The Funicular connects the Douro river bank to the high town atthe Batalha quarter, through the Guindais slope. It is the newway that grasps itself to firm stone and ends in a tower facing theriver, such as the old wall which leans on a big rock. At bothedges of this trajectory there are two stations, each one lookingfor the adequate relation to each part of the town and itsimmediate environment areas. Both stations are entirely built ofwhite concrete, the most brilliant colourgrade in the North: inthe subterraneous station at the mountain in order to betterreflect the light entering through the vertical accesses andskylights; in the station at the valley, to make reference to theclear plans of the slope. The water which runs along the slopeand the line of the valley formed by the rails, controlled by littledams that decrease and sustain its speed, falls freely as a cascadein the interior of the station, being then conducted to the river.

The buildings were drawnwith very simple shapes, following the influences of Mies and theChicago buildings. The main interest about the building is itsfaçade. Its skin is composed out of a single module that wraps allthe volumes. That module was studied so it could fit on 2different ways creating a glass façade and an opaque façade.

Oporto Blood Bank.

AddressRua do Bolama 1334200 - 139 PortoPortugalhttp://www.ipsangue.org/maxcontent-documento-111.html

. The O’Porto Blood Bank is built on a detached plot with anirregular polygon in the heart of a city block. The building-as-lineruns through the polygon´s different directions searching itsgeometry. The Blood bank supports all activities of regional bloodcollection and analysis as well as its partition in 3 components(erythrocytes, plasma and platelets). These components are laterto be distributed to hospitals and pharmaceutical industries. Thistypology is new and hardly tested. It has a great complexity dueto permanent risk of blood contamination. Continuous scientificand technological developments force permanent alterations. Itis therefore a building with an unstable interior, which willundergo frequent metamorphosis throughout its life. The buildingprogram is a linear sequential process (of blood disassembly). Itsuggests to be more adequate a low and fluid construction ratherthan a high building, as pointed out by the neighbouring housingbuildings (5 and 6 levels).

Bar Ar de Rio.

AddressCais de Gaia Vila Nova de Gaia PortoPortugal

. The bar “ar de rio” is a restaurant and cafeteria with a terrace, situated on the southern river banks of the Douro. It’s a compactpavilion designed by Francisco Vieira de Campos and CristinaGuedes (Menos é Mais) that’s most noticeable for its cohesivearchitectural and structural concept. The «beehive» constructionsystem – in hexagonal modules of solid steel – becomes theformal pattern for the building’s external and internal texture. The efficiency of the design is also revealed by its lightness, reducing vertical structures to a minimum and allowing greatertransparency. The final result is striking for its abstract qualityand expressive potential for invisibility or opacity.

. Arrábida Bridge (Ponte da Arrábida) was designed by Portuguesecivil engineer Edgar Cardoso in 1963. The project mentioned herewas included in the design as an observation post to watch theconstruction works on the bridge. The structure has beenrenovated by architect Miguel Tomé and transformed into arestaurant and bar. The building is undoubtedly one of thearchitectural gems of Porto, but still undervalued. Perhaps this isdue to the fact that the initial project was designed by a civilengineer, although one of the most notable in Portugal.
