December 31st is New Year's Eve, the last day of the year.December 31st is not a public holiday, most people go to work but they leave earlier than usual. Schools are closed for the Christmas holidays. In the evening English people have parties in their homes, in pubs or clubs with their friends and families.Just before midnight, people hold hands and sing a traditional song called “Auld Lang Syne” reminding them of old and new friends.They count the seconds down (5,4,3,2,1...!) to the New Year and at 12 they hug, kiss and wish each other a “Happy New Year”. Children also stay up late to join the party.One of the most famous image of New Year’s Eve in UK, is the Big Ben counting down the last seconds of the year followed by a fireworks performance. A lot of people watch it on television.
