A little history…

Liverpool is a city in the North West of England with
a population of about 500,000 people in the city
and 1,500,000 in the Metropolitan Area

The city is situated in the estuary of the River Mersey

The City of Liverpool was founded 1207 but for over five centuries remained a
small port

Liverpool began to grow in the 18th century due
mainly to the slave trade

At the start of the 19th Centruy,
40% of the world’s trade passed through Liverpool
and it was Britain’s second city after London

The first inter-city railway in the world was built in 1830
between Liverpool and Manchester

The city’s population grew during the 19th century
mainly due to the immigration of Irish people escaping the
famine – Liverpool is sometimes called “Ireland’s
Second City”

The city also has the UK’s oldest black comunity and a long established Chinatown,
as well as receiving many immigrants from Eastern Europe over the twentieth
century

In terms of music, everything started in the
early 1960s with the Merseybeat sound

There are many places to visit for Beatles’ fans including The Beatles Story in the Albert Dock, the houses where they grew up and
some of the places they made famous in their songs….

As for football, there are TWO big teams

The oldest (and the best) team is Everton who play at
Goodison Park and were founded in 1878
