A little history…


Liverpool is a city in the North West of England with

a population of about 500,000 people in the city

and 1,500,000 in the Metropolitan Area



The city is situated in the estuary of the River Mersey


The City of Liverpool was founded 1207 but for over five centuries remained a

small port


Liverpool began to grow in the 18th century due

mainly to the slave trade

At the start of the 19th Centruy,

40% of the world’s trade passed through Liverpool

and it was Britain’s second city after London


The first inter-city railway in the world was built in 1830

between Liverpool and Manchester


The city’s population grew during the 19th century

mainly due to the immigration of Irish people escaping the

famine – Liverpool is sometimes called “Ireland’s

Second City”


The city also has the UK’s oldest black comunity and a long established Chinatown,

as well as receiving many immigrants from Eastern Europe over the twentieth

century


There are two great obsessions in Liverpool…


MUSIC


FOOTBALL


In terms of music, everything started in the

early 1960s with the Merseybeat sound


In particular, there were “four lads who shook the

world”……

The Beatles


There are many places to visit for Beatles’ fans including The Beatles Story in the Albert Dock, the houses where they grew up and

some of the places they made famous in their songs….

As for football, there are TWO big teams


The oldest (and the best) team is Everton who play at

Goodison Park and were founded in 1878



There is also another team, founded in 1892, who play

in red and are called Liverpool…

The Cavern is the club where the Beatles started to play

The Tate North– this is to be found in the Albert Dock

complex in the city centre next to the River Mersey

Technology whihc specialises in film, video

World Museum Liverpool – this specialises in

archaeology and natural science and also has an excellent planetarium

The Walker Art Gallery – this houses one of the largest collections of paintings outside London and is sometimes called the

National Gallery of the North

In 2004, Liverpool’s waterfront was declared a UNESCO World Heritage

The Albert Dock is at the heart of this area – what

was once a busy port is now full of bars, restaurants and

galleries

Saint George’s Hall is one of the largest neo-classical buildings in the world

In 2008, Liverpool was European Capital of

Culture


For this special year, a new concert venue for around 10,000 people was built next to the

river - Liverpool Arena

There was also a massive regeneration project in the city centre called

From Guadix to Liverpool…


When?


15th to 17th of May (Saturday to Monday)


How?


By bus to Málaga and by plane to Liverpool


How much?


This depends on the number of people and

will probably be around 300 euros


Who?


Students from the Guadix Official Language School

and their partners/friends etc


Students under 18 need to be accompanied by

their parent(s) or legal guardian


There will be a meeting for those who are

interested at the start of March
