Early Scottish Immigration To New Zealand
Why Did The Scottish Come To New Zealand?
By Lillian Gough
Many Scottish came looking for work as farmers or hoping to secure land.
And to escape the big Scottish potato famine.
Many of the Scottish lived in the South Island, because the climate was similar to the climate in Scotland
New Zealanders of Scottish Birth
The Scottish people that came to Waipu originaly went to Australia but found that New Zealand was a more suitable settlement.
John and Janet Kerr had 8 sons, only 6 of their sons came with them to New Zealand.
Many Scots came because of our farming needs and brought tarten skirts and presperterian church with them so I'm glad that the Scottish came to New Zealand and I'm proud of my Scottish ansestery.
