Spain and Portugal represent a vast territory all together, but above all it's a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Such geographical configuration means very different climatological influences for the regions with different grape-growing districts (DOs), which have their own appellations. The working patterns in the wine producing regions are Terroir, or soil type Average and total annual hours of sunshine, average annual precipitation Land elevation Winemaking techniques authorized and practiced Permitted types of grape varieties within defined boundaries Grape-growing practices allowed


Local producers' activities are deeply intertwined with the wine culture, sometimes regulations and local practices. All the potentiality of a wine is expressed within the limits and possibilities of the previous features.

But no matter how determinant these features are on the different appellations, from an enological and viticultural perspective , they mean little to the average tourist.
