VIENNA - NOW OR NEVER
To describe Vienna in a single eBook is simply im-possible. For this reason I have tried to present the city with lots of photographs and create an overview of exciting places and locations to visit on your next trip to this great city.
Almost every street corner in Vienna has some con-nection to a famous musician, poet, politician or e-ven members of the imperial family. I am inviting you to come on a colorful walk through the most livable city in the world. Vienna won first place in the renow-ned city contest for the seventh time in a row in 2016.
In the chapter "Worth Seeing" the reader will find se-veral sights they should definitely not miss when in Vienna: from a trip to "Vienna's underground" to a river cruise on the Danube Canal or a visit of the Em-peror's Residence Schoenbrunn and the adjacent zoo.
The magnificent boulevard of Vienna, the "Ring", was given its own chapter in this book. The Vienna Ring Tram takes you on a 25-minute round trip to all the pompous buildings on the "Ring".
A small selection of the many museums of Vienna as well as a glimpse into the churches of the city is pre-sented in the corresponding chapters.
Vienna without music is unimaginable. This is why this book contains an entire chapter on music and theater. Vienna is also a city for shopping. The sty-lish city centre, wonderful markets and gigantic shop-ping palaces in the centre, individual districts and in the outskirts invite you to go on a shopping spree.
Vienna has an excellent public transportation sys-tem. The modern underground network, busses and tramways, as well as the rapid transit trains guaran-tee quick and safe travels within Vienna.
From Vienna's Main Station one can reach Stephans-platz in a few minutes by underground, Praterstern by rapid transit train, or Belvedere Castle on foot. O-ne thing is for sure: Vienna's visitors keep coming back!

HISTORYTraces indicate that the Vienna Basin had already been settled in the Neolithic Age. On the Leopoldsberg, you will find a fortification from Celtic times and today's city centre used to be the location of the Roman town of "Vindobona". Today, visitors can admire the excavati-ons from Roman times at Hoher Markt. roemermuseum.at In the ye-ar 1278, the Habsburg family started their 630-year long reign. Even today, many traces from k&k times (imperial royal times), the time of the Habsburg monarchy, remain.
Especially Empress Maria Theresia, Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) are still well-remembered even today. Monu-ments and sights remind visitors of these glamorous times.

The city of Vienna is divided into 23 individual districts. The number of the district can be found on the street signs. True Viennese refer to their district simply by number, for example "the first".

Several key scenes of the movie "The Third Man" were filmed in the "Vienna Under-ground". The tour shows filming locations and guides you through the streets of Vien-na to the arch of the Wienfluss river. The canal network of the city encompasses 2,400 kilometres of canals.

The area alongside the Danube canal is a perfect R&R spot in the middle of the city. Numerous cafes and even a "Badeschiff" (like a floating swimming pool) attract many guests. The Danube canal can be reached by underground (Station Schwedenplatz). A tip: bring a drink and sit at the waterfront or enjoy the many graffiti.

The underground stop is at the Reichsbruecke bridge and opens a view of the hig-hest building of the country: the Donauturm (Danube Tower) and the DC Tower 1. The Donauinsel is an island, 21 kilometres long, and offers fun for the whole family. Every year, the huge festival "Donauinselfest" takes place here.

The original construction work that resulted in what today is known as the Graben were financed with the ransom collected for the English King Richard the Lionheart. Today, the Graben is a posh boulevard, where seeing and being seen is very import-ant. Shops and cafes are found alongside the street.

The Burggarten park is the home of many colorful butterflies. With waterfalls and ponds, the proprietors tried to reconstruct a tropical rain forest, which serves as a ha-bitat for numerous exotic animals. Besides the butterflies, which fly around freely in the building, visitors can also see animals hatch.

This was Empress Sisi's abode during the summer months. The castle has 1,441 rooms. The Hall of Mirrors was the location for Mozart's performance when he was only six years old. The Grand Galerie hosted the Vienna Congress in 1814 and 1815. And the ample site also houses the Gloriette and the Palm House.

Maria Theresia's husband, Emperor Franz I Stephan von Lothringen, presented the Menagerie in Schoenbrunn Castle to his guests in 1752. The animals seemed to en-joy Vienna, and the first african elephant baby was born in Schoenbrunn in 1906, as well as the panda bear Fu Long, who was also born here.

Emperor Joseph II opened the Prater in 1766 for the public. The former hunting grounds of the Emperor encompass six square kilometres. The amusement park, in season from March to October, is called "Wurstelprater". From Praterstern Station, visitors can admire the giant ferris wheel, which is open year-round.

The Donau City is the youngest part of Vienna, and has been growing continuously since 1996. It is also home to the UNO City and the Austria Center Vienna. Besides modern office buildings and apartments, the Kaiserwasser area and the Old Danube offer optimal opportunities for rest and recreation.

The UNO City and Austria Center Vienna are located right next to the underground station, which is also the starting point for a walk through the Donaupark to the Da-nube Tower or to the Old Danube.

The Kahlenberg hill is a popular destination. The "Monte Glatzo", what the hill is cal-led in Viennese dialect, was the route on which Polish King Sobieski and the reserve army came to the aid of occupied Vienna in 1683. The eradication of the Ottoman army of Kara Mustafa and the liberation of Hungary were the result.

Karl Lueger was mayor of Vienna from 1897 to 1920. On this square is the Café Prue-ckel, which is frequented predominantly by students from the nearby University of Vienna. The cafe is under monument protection and is popular especially for its 1950s-style interior decorations.

The Vienna Stadtpark was the first public park of the city. Over time, more and more monuments were erected in the park, among them the golden Johann-Strauss-Me-morial. The gold plated bronze statue was unveiled in 1921 and is one of the most-photographed monuments world-wide.

Here is also a famous spot for taking pictures: the Mozart Memorial. The ample park, which also houses the Butterfly House and a cafe, leads visitors to the museum Alb-ertina. During the warmer months, the wide green serves as a recreation and relaxati-on space for many visitors.

The former master builder of the Cologne cathedral, Friedrich von Schmidt, completed the 100-metre building in the year 1883. The City Hall as well as the square in front of it are both well-booked event locations. Here is also the location for the Life Ball. During winter, advent markets and ice skating ranks are the highlights for visitors.

From 1883 to 1918, the Reichsrats (Imperial Council) building hosted many representa-tives from countries which were members of the council. After the Second World War, the building hosted the National Council and the Federal Council. The Pallas-Athene-Fountain in front of the building was completed in 1902 and is particularly impressive.

Across the street from the parliament is the "Rose Garden" of Vienna. The Volksgar-ten park offers visitors the opportunity to become a sponsor for a favorite rose. When you enter the park from the parliament, you will see the Theseus temple, which is a smaller replica of Athens' Theseions.

The name of the square refers to the two statues of horsemen, which stem from An-ton Dominik Fernkorn. When entering the square from the Ring, Archduke Karl is on the left and Eugen on the right. The Heldenplatz hosts parades and demonstrations of the Austrian Armed Forces on October 26, Austria's National Holiday.

The memorial of Empress Maria Theresia has been on the square since 1999. To the right and left of the memorial are the Museums of Art History and Natural History. Right behind the statue is the Museumsquartier (museum quarter), which houses the Leopold Museum amongst many others and offers a broad gastronomical variety.

The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is the oldest and largest university in the German-speaking world. The university can be reached via the Schottentor sta-tion, which is a hub for ten tramway lines, two bus lines and one underground train line.

The Moelker Bastei was part of Vienna's fortification. The memorial shows Andreas von Liebenberg, the mayor during the second siege by the Turks. Behind it, in the Pasqualihouse, Ludwig van Beethoven composed some of his most influential works from 1804 to 1815.

The square is dedicated to the memorial of Infantry Regiment Hoch- and Deutschmeis-ter No. 4. The monument is in front of the Rossau Barracks. The history of the legendary Hoch- and Deutschmeister dates back to the time of the Turkish Wars in 1695. In the ye-ar 1895, it became Vienna's home regiment.

The k.&k. Vienna Regiment Orchestra IR4 - Hoch- and Deutschmeister developed from the continuation of the traditional Regiment Bands from imperial times. The Francis of Assisi church was modeled after the St. Martin church in Cologne. The house of prayer was dedicated in 1913 and is also called "Emperor Jubilee Church" or "Mexico Church". The best view of the church is from the Danube, which is why we chose the corresponding underground station.

When the pestilence ravaged Vienna in 1713, Emperor Karl VI. vowed to build a church for Karl Borromaeus, if the pestilence were averted. On the inside, an elevator takes visitors up to the dome to admire the frescos by Michael Rottmeyr up close.

RUPRECHTSKIRCHEThe first church of Vienna dates back to the middle of the 4th centu-ry. However, no remnants remain from the first Peter's Church. Thus, the Ruprecht's Church became the oldest, still standing church of the city. If you believe the tales, this church was built in the year 740. Documentary evidence dates back to the year 1200. Right next to the church was the Salzamt ("salt department"). The so-called "Salters" traded salt kernels (Salzgries in German, which is the root for the Viennese term "Greissler" for grocer). When the salt trading monopoly was lifted, the department was inoperable. Until today, the Viennese refer to a useless complaint as "complaining at the Salt Department".

The church at Baumgartner Hoehe was built by Otto Wagner. The Church of Saint Leopold or Otto-Wagner-Church lies on the Baumgartner Hoehe, a centre for social medicine (accessible via busses 47A and 48A).

STEPHANSDOMThe "Steffl" is not only the landmark of Vienna, but the Cathedral St. Stephen of Vienna is also the most well-known church of Austria. Originally, two high towers were planned, but the north tower only made it to 68 metres, whereas the south tower measures 136,4 me-tres in height. The Austrian-Hungarian monarchy did not allow for a church to be higher than St. Stephen's Cathedral. The largest church of Austria, the Cathedral of Maria-Conception in Linz, is shor-ter by two metres. But not only the church, also the enormous bell is popular with the Austrians. The "Pummerin" weighs over 20 tons and traditionally rings to greet the new year.

In 1853, Emperor Franz Joseph I. narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. In grati-tude, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, who later became Emperor of Mexico, called for a charity collection. The Votivchurch is the symbol for the cohabitation of all nations of the Danube Monarchy and the most significant neo-Gothic sacral building in the world.

The name stems from the founder of the collection, Albert Casimir Duke of Saxon-Te-schen. The Albertina is one of the most frequently visited museums of Austria and is an important part of a visit to Vienna, especially for those interested in art.

The Upper Belvedere is of particular importance for Austria. On May 15, 1955, Aus-tria's Treaty was signed in the Marble Hall. The Belvedere was the summer residence of Prince Eugen. Today, it is an important museum with the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings.

When looking from the Ring to Empress Maria Theresia, the Museum of Art History is to the left side. When entering the museum, one is overwhelmed by the pompous de-cor. The upper level is a beautiful cafe. It is a breathtaking museum with many highlights.

The ceremonial room of the Austrian National Library is one of the most beautiful halls of its kind and shows the largest baroque library of Europe. The National Library houses more than 200,000 volumes. Visitors can also admire the Prinz Eugen collec-tion, which comprises more than 15,000 volumes.

VIENNA RING TRAMA comfortable option to explore the pompous boulevard is offered by Wiener Linien. From the Schwedenplatz station starting, a tram-way doing a round trip on the Ring Street is leaving in 30-minute in-tervals. The trip takes about 25 minutes and earphones tell visitors interesting facts in eight languages as well as in the local dialect. The round trip gives the opportunity to get a first overview of the buil-dings and sights on the Ring. The Vienna Ring Tram is operating daily. The first tour leaves at 10am and the last tour at 5.30pm.

Vienna's 100 bus lines get you comfortably and safely to your destination. During the night, busses of the "Nightline" serve the network. Tickets for the Wiener Linien can be bought at the vending machines in the underground stations, at tobacconists, as well as from the bus driver.

The first horse-drawn tramway operated in Vienna in 1865. Over time, the Vienna tramway network became the fifth-largest in the world. A special connection is the "Badner Bahn", which takes you from the Opera directly to Baden near Vienna. In Vienna, the tramway is affectionately called "Bim".

The underground network has been serving the population since 1978. Since most underground stations have multiple exits, which may be located far from each other, it is advised to arrange for a very specific meeting point (name the exact exit) when meeting somebody at an underground station.

UNDERGROUND
Schwedenplatz is the departure point for sightseeing and line traffic on the Danube river. It is also the docking point for the Twin City Liner, which connects Vienna with Bratislava. Further to the West, in Nussdorf (tramway line D) is the landing stage Vien-na-Nussdorf, where roundtrip ships and excursion boats dock.

Operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), the rapid transit trains are import-ant means of transport in Vienna. It is advantageous to be able to cross long distan-ces even beyond the city limits without having to change trains. Tickets have to be bought in advance at the vending machines. No tickets are sold on trains.

The railjet, the IC and EC trains of the Austrian Federal Railways OEBB connect Austria's state capitals hourly or bi-hourly. Convenient connections are available from and to Zurich, Frankfurt (by ICE), Prague, Budapest and Venice (starting 2017) round out the convenient travel offers. For international routes, OEBB offer night trains as an alternative.

Economy ClassThe Economy Class area of railjet trains offer a children's movie theatre in the first waggon as well as an area for storing bicycles. All saloon coaches on the railjet are air-conditioned and offer free WIFI for every passenger. Two seats share a common power out-let. The Economy Class area is right behind the locomotive and provides seats for 316 passengers in four waggons. Behind the Economy Class cars, one will find the railway restaurant.

First ClassThe railjet offers first class seats for 76 passengers. Gener-ous legroom and comfortable, individually adjustable leather seats create a relaxing and truly a First Class travel experi-ence. This area also offers space for passengers with re-duced mobility. Every seat has its own power outlet and fold-ing tray table. Drinks and culinary treats from the OEBB Board-Restaurant will be served right at your seat.

Business ClassBesides the very comfortable chairs, the 16 seats in the business class area offer exquisite service as well. Every single passenger receives a complimen-tary welcome drink. Meals and drinks can be or-dered a la carte and will be served at your seat. The generous space ensures a very comfortable travel experience. To upgrade from First to Business Class, a 15 Euro surcharge is required.

ÖBB Night trains take passengers environmentally friendly, comfortable and reasona-bly priced to the destination. Because the ÖBB night trains connect the city center with the city center and thus long transfer times omitted, the holiday starts with the journey.

The optionsThe night trains ÖBB offer different travel categories. Travellers can choose between discount seats, couchette available with four to six beds and sleeper compartments.
Private compartmentsFamilies can book an entire family compartment for max. 2 adults with max. 4 children (up to 15 years). Comfortable couches and a breakfast offered. For women's, ladies couchette compartments are available. On many routes a particularly comfortable "DeLuxe compartment" is offered.
Individual serviceIn sleeping and couchette cars every guest can be individually awaken. Breakfast is also included in the price. Passengers in the sleeper can even put together a great breakfast, which is served in the compart-ment. Additional snacks and beverages (charged individually) can be served from the train team in place.
Car or motor bike on the trainMany night train routs offer the option to take a motorcycle or car onto the train. Passengers can enjoy a stress-free trip while their car is safely loaded onto the train for an affordable price.

Within Vienna, the public transportation provider Wiener Linien offers a network of busses, tramways and subway trains for quick and comfortable transportation. Tick-ets for public transit can be bought online even before your arrival, at the numerous ticket machines or at the Wiener Linien vending booths.

THE VIENNA-CARD
The Vienna-Card includes unlimited transportation within the entire pub-lic transit network of Austria's capital. There are two types of cards, valid either 48 or 72 hours.
Visitors can purchase the Vienna-Card in hotels, at the Tourist Informa-tion office at Albertinaplatz, at the Main Station as well as at the airport. The Vienna-Card can also be purchased at all Wiener Linien sales and information booths as well as through their online store.
The Vienna-Card offers more than 210 specials when visiting one of the many museums, sights, theatres or concerts. Benefits include dis-counts at cafes, restaurants, or at one of the traditional Viennese "Heuriger" (wine tavern).
A manual for the Vienna-Card can be found in the 120-page coupon booklet that is handed out to every purchaser of the card.

For travellers from Linz, the AIRail offer, which can be booked on www.austrian.com or your travel agents, was made even more attractive. The ticket machines at the travel centre at Linz Main Sta-tion let you check in and your boarding pass is also a ticket for your train-flight-connection. AIRail travellers can find their reserved seat in First Class and Economy Class trains.

DIRECTLY TO THE AIRPORT
The state capitals Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and St. Pölten have been offering direct connections to Vienna Airport since 2015. If you are coming from Graz, you can take one of the two daily di-rect railjet trains to the airport (RJ656 and RJ755).
OEBB offer a total of 51 daily direct connections between Salzburg and Vienna Airport.
The railjet trains takes you from Salzburg to Vienna Airport in 2 hours and 49 minutes.

The 17 travel centres on many Austrian train stations offer everything you need for a private or business trip by train. Because of the close cooperation with the Austrian Federal Railways, they offer interesting combinations on a regular basis. I personally took advantage of the experience of the travel centres on many of my travels.
