DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN METRO MANILA 

Composed of 897 kilometers of drainage laterals,59 kilometers of drainage mains and interceptors,and 659 kilometers of open waterwayscomposed of esteros/creeks and rivers.

Any hindrance within the network of drainagesystems may cause the disruption in the flow ofwater when not properly addressed and will

eventually result to flooding.

ESTEROS IN METRO MANILA 

Majority of the esteros are located in the city ofManila.

These discharge into the Pasig River or directly toManila Bay.

The easement of most esteros are encroached by

informal settlers. In severe cases, the informalsettlers are along the watercourse itself therebyleaving no space for water to flow.

Objectives

To perform intensified cleanup operations of majoresteros, creeks, and rivers in Metro Manila incompliance with the Supreme court order to clean up

waterways leading to Manila Bay

To enjoin the communities’ involvement in the dredging,

removal and hauling of garbage, spoils, slits and otherdebris along waterways

To conduct medical missions and teach-ins/seminars onsolid waste management, health and sanitationpromotion in the barangays

Helped prevent floodings and inundations whentyphoons Pedring and Quiel hit the country lateSeptember in 2011.

Of the eight flood prone areas, only two wereflooded. This, however, was due to the water’s

high tide and rapidly subsided.
