You have decided to enroll in AP English Language & Composition —a challenging college-level course that has two primary goals:

● to represent a college-level freshman composition course● to prepare you for the AP English Language &

Composition Exam, which will be administered in May 2022.

This course focuses on three specific forms of writing: ● rhetorical analysis● argument● synthesis

Our reading will focus on nonfiction texts.

This summer assignment has been designed to help you to move away from formulaic writing and move towards more inspired thinking and writing.

Great writing comes from original thought, and is characterized by effective organization, a unique and appropriate written voice, deliberate word choice, expressive sentence fluency, and accurate, consistent conventions such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

“You can approach the act of writing with nervousness,

excitement, hopefulness, or even despair - the sense

that you can never completely put on the page what’s

in your mind and heart. You can come to the act with

your fists clenched and your eyes narrowed, ready to

kick a** and take down names. You can come to it

because you want a girl to marry you or because you

want to change the world. Come to it any way but

lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come

lightly to the blank page.” (King 106)

S u m m e r A s s i g n m e n t

Part 1 - READ.Read pages 103 - 249 of Stephen King’s text, On Writing.

Part 2 - CREATE.Make your own rules of writing* based on what you learn from reading King’s text. Create a Google slide presentation and submit in Google classroom.* - King’s rules of writing are geared more towards writers of fiction than writers of college essays. Your rules of writing should apply more towards nonfiction (ie, your college essay) than towards fiction.

Part 3 - READ SOME MORE.Read a minimum of eight (8) standout college essays.

Part 4 - REFLECT.Complete college essay reflection assignment.

Part 5 - POST.Post at least one (1) substantive comment, question, response, or idea related to a specific quote from either Stephen King’s On Writing OR from any of the standout college essays in the AP Language Summer Assignment Discussion Forum.

Part 6 - RESPOND.Respond substantively to at least one other post in the AP Language Summer Assignment Discussion Forum.

Grade 12 Summer AssignmentIn addition to completing the AP Language Summer Assignment, you must also complete the Grade 12 Summer Assignment.
