THE VILLAGE NEWS
BELMONT VILLAGE OF SUNNYVALE
NOVEMBER 2017
By: Radhika SinghExecutive Director
Thanksgiving is the time where we stopand recognize the goodness of what wehave. It is also one of my most favoritetimes of the year. When I think ofThanksgiving, a few words come tomind: hope, love, faith and thanks.
A few years ago, I started a newtradition with my family, which takesplace right before the Thanksgivingfeast begins. Each Thanksgiving we goaround the room and say one or twothings we are thankful for. When I lookback to when we first started thistradition and think of how theresponses have become morethoughtful each year, I think about thelove, faith, hope and the thanks we allshare.
Love is an unconditional feeling. Faith iscomplete trust or confidence insomeone or something. Hope is afeeling of expectation and desire for acertain thing to happen. Thanks is anexpression of gratitude. All of thesewords to me summarize BelmontVillage of Sunnyvale. The staff, residentsand families all collectively embodythese words through their actions eachand every day.
Take a moment and reflect oneverything you are thankful for. What
are you thankful for?
As I walk around the community, I thinkabout how thankful I am for the staff, residents and families I run into eachday. Belmont Village of Sunnyvale istruly my second family. The staff here isremarkable and I cannot thank themenough for all their hard work each andevery day. The impact all of you (staff, residents and families) have made in mylife is unexplainable, and I am thankful!Thank you!
Employee Appreciation FundAs we enter into the holiday season, weknow that many of you would like toshow our employees your appreciationfor all of the hard work they dothroughout the year. As you know, weask that you do not tip our staff, butevery year at this time we establish anEmployee Appreciation Fund that iscomprised of the generous donationsfrom our residents and families. Thedonations from the fund are disbursedto all non-management staff. If youhave any questions about the EmployeeAppreciation Fund, please contact me. Iwill be sending a letter to all familieswith more information in the upcomingweeks to follow.
Happy Thanksgiving!

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
By: Kathy NguyenMemory Programs Coordinator
In November, the residents ofthe Circle of Friends programwill be immersed in aviationhistory, where the dream offlight started with kites andgliders to heavier-than-air andspacecrafts. As old as the thirdcentury, the use of buoyancyoccurred on unmanned flights.Hot air balloons were used formilitary purposes such assignaling or to scare awayenemy troops. Through thedesire to analyze theatmosphere during the 17th and18th centuries, hydrogen gaswas discovered and turned intohydrogen balloons. Manytheories in mechanics such asfluid dynamics and Newton’sLaw of Motion created apathway to modernaerodynamics. By the early 20thcentury, engine technologicaladvancements along withaerodynamics provided a wayfor controlled, powered flight tobecome a reality. Circle ofFriend will enjoy a visit toNASA’s Ames Research Centerand the Hiller Aviation Museumin honor of Aviation HistoryMonth.

GUIDELINES FOR AHEALTHIERTHANKSGIVING
Many of us see our waistlinesexpand during the Holidays. Most people gain at least apound during the holidays. Some will keep that weight onpermanently.
So be the man or woman witha plan. With a little knowledgeyou can indulge in traditionalholiday cooking and still stay fitand healthy.
KEEP MOVING:Eat less and exercise moreduring the holidays to preventweight gain. In addition tostaying active, try to avoidsitting for prolonged periods oftime such as watching footballgames. Too much sitting ishazardous to your health. Try tokeep with your fitness routine. Itis recommended by experts towork out in the morning toavoid being distracted later inthe day with parties or relatives.
STAY HYDRATED:Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily.Your brain can sometimesconfuse thirst with hunger. Alarge glass of water before ameal (especially beforeconsidering seconds) can helplessen the amount you consume.Drink 2 big glasses before thebig feast.
INDULGE FOR A NIGHT, NOTA SEASON:It is easy to overindulge with aseason of parties and leftovers.Do not let treats or leftoverslinger in your house. When theparty is over, dump the junk!
REMEMBER IT’S A SINGLEDAY:If you eat too much on thissingle day, the reality is that oneday won’t make or break yourhealth plan. It is when peoplestart a pattern of daily treats orskip exercise and that continuesfrom Thanksgiving through theend of the year. Don’t let oneday of indulgence turn into amonth of indulgence.
Happy Thanksgiving!
