Content & Language Integrated Learning

CLIL is an approach which integrates content and non-native language.

Which CLIL?

Soft CLIL: the topic is part of the language ELT course curriculum

(Language led)

Hard CLIL: the way some schools teach half of the curriculum

immersed in a target language (Content led)

CLIL

4 Pillars of CLIL

Core integrated components of CLIL are the 4C’s: Content,

Communication, Cognition, Culture

Content: curricular subjects apart from languages

Communication: learners are encouraged to produce subject

language orally as well as in writing and to participate in meaningful

interaction.

Cognition: thinking skills, including LOTS (Lower Order Thinking

Skills) and HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)

Culture: learners are encouraged to think of themselves as part of

a larger group in society and to respect how others live and learn

Content

“Connections: Content” in every unit. The curricular subjects covered

in Big English are: Art, Geography, Math, Music, Physical Education,

Science, and Social Studies. (refer to Big English S&S)

Communication

“Think Big” questions encourage discussion;

“Speaking” practice in Review encourages students to produce

language orally;

“Writing” in every unit encourages students to produce language in

writing.

CLIL

Cognition

questions.

CLIL

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201312

Culture

“Connections: Around the World” in every unit develops awareness of

a larger group in society.

What makes it great?

CLIL: because students are learning English and so much more

21st Century Skills: because students want to get ahead and need to be prepared for the world around them

Assessment for Learning: because confidence leads to success

Each unit opens with a high energy song to introduce key vocabulary in a fun context.

Key vocabulary is presented again in isolation.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201320

Think Big questions let students personalize and use key vocabulary.

Fun and highly visual stories encourage a love of reading.

Reading comprehension and discussion questions ensure that students have understood the story.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201321

Grammar is taught in context and supported by clear grammar charts as reference.

Fun activities reinforce students’ understanding of the new language.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201322

With Around the World Connections, students learn about different cultures and countries.

In Content Connections, students encounter text from academic areas such as social studies, science, and math. Content vocabulary is highlighted.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201323

Students then follow the model to create their own writing.

Models and examples of writing are broken down and explained in an easy-to-follow format.

Values lesson related to the theme of the unit lets students apply language they’ve learned.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201324

Now, students show what they have learned in the unit.

I Can checkboxes help students assess their own learning.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201325

Checkpoint lessons consolidate material from the three previous units and help train learners in Assessment for Learning techniques

Students review key language from the previous units and compare it with their current knowledge of that language.

The Get ready task helps identify any gaps in learners’ knowledge of key language points so that teachers can focus review as needed.

Big English Product Intro to China l July 201326

The Get set and Go! tasks allow learners to consolidate and use the new language in pair and group activities featuring cut-out materials.

Students have fun with a mini-portfolio section, and then reassess their understanding of the key language points from the previous group of units.
