De Montfort University celebrated one of the proudest days in itshistory when it welcomed Her Majesty The Queen on the first stopof her Diamond Jubilee Tour on Thursday 8 March.

Accompanied by the His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and Her RoyalHighness The Duchess of Cambridge, Her Majesty arrived to the roar of a huge crowdthat had gathered in DMU’s Magazine Square from early in the day.

The Royal Party arrived through Magazine Gateway, a medieval city gateway added toLeicester Castle by the Third Earl of Leicester. A celebration of Leicester and DMU’smulti-cultural population followed, with colourful demonstrations of Indian and Chinesedancing. Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness were then escorted to a fashion showheld within a specially erected marquee in the Hugh Aston courtyard, featuring stunningcreations by University fashion graduates.

The exhibits that were placed around the Royal Party route included the six prototypedesigns for a shoe for the Duchess of Cambridge, along with a pair of shoes that weremade in Leicester for the Queen’s grandmother more than a century ago.

Before departing, each of the Royal Guests was invited to sign the university’s visitorsbook before Her Majesty unveiled a plaque to commemorate the visit that was forgedat a family-owned foundry in Leicestershire.

The Vice-Chancellor commenting on the day said “Having The Duke of Edinburgh andKate, The Duchess of Cambridge, accompany her made this event even morespecial. The Queen looked resplendent and after escorting her around thecampus I couldn’t help but be charmed. She was so happy to meet the studentsand particularly interested in the diversity of the campus and the number ofinternational students we have here.”

“I have no doubt that all those who witnessed this historic event for the universitywill be left with memories to cherish for a long time to come.”

Department of Accounting and Finance makes history! The Department of Accounting and Finance within Leicester Business School has made history following several recent successfulaccreditation awards. The department now holds more professional body exemptions than any other in the country.

This is in additionto the exemptions already offered for ACCA papers by the department.

In addition, the department was also successful in securing Australian accreditation to its programmes, from the organisation CPAAustralia, once again demonstrating the international excellence and global reach contained within the Business School. Thesesuccesses reinforce the position of Accounting and Finance as a Department of quality and distinctiveness in the area of professionalaccounting studies.

A law student is one of two recipients of the first ever scholarshipset up to commemorate the royal wedding.

Kerri-Anne Ferdinando has been awarded the Duke and Duchess of CambridgeScholarship – a grant that will cover her bar school fees and help her on her way tobecoming a fully qualified barrister.

The 21-year-old from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, who graduated from the Law Schoolin July, is a student member of Middle Temple – the Inn of Court in London that offeredthe scholarship.

Kerri-Anne’s personal tutor within the Faculty, Louise Jacklin – who has devised anextra-curricular initiative called the Bar Project to help DMU students make informedchoices about their law careers – is very proud of her success.

“Kerri-Anne is an extremely dedicated and determined young woman,” said Louise, who is also a barrister and a member of Middle Temple.

“She has taken part in every talk, every visit and every extra-curricular activitythat I have organised as part of the Bar Project, in a bid to get herself where sheis today. She’s even found time to be a ‘Bar Project Buddy’ – sharing herexperiences and knowledge with younger law students.”

“Thanks to the fantastic employability initiatives at DMU, we have been able tosupport her along the way and give her the information she needs to make herchoices, but the reason she’s won this scholarship is because she’s ahard-working and talented student, who’s a credit to De Montfort University.”

The Duchess of Cambridge visited De Montfort University in March, when sheaccompanied Her Majesty The Queen on her visit that marked the start of the DiamondJubilee Tour. The royal visitors toured the state-of-the-art Hugh Aston building, which ishome to the Faculty of Business and Law.

Students pitch for success! Two groups of enterprising students from the Faculty have received national recognition at the Varsity Pitch organised by the governingbody for Enterprise Societies NACUE (National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs), following their previoussuccesses in the Faculty’s own Fox’s Lair enterprise competition.

One group of students led by David Scull entered their business - Motion Clean - into the competition in the hopes of winning a £10,000prize. Another student business led by James Beddows and Tom Birch, also received recognition for their student bike hire business,Bright Bikes. Both groups run their businesses alongside their current studies.

The national competition involved a 90 second video pitch briefly explaining the concept of their business. Short-listed finalists werethen invited, along with other student enterprises, to an event in London where they had 3 minutes to deliver a pitch without the aidof any visual equipment. This was then followed by a gruelling 6 minutes of Q&A where every aspect of their business plan was putunder scrutiny.

Being selected for the finals of such a competitive national competition not only proved a great experience for the students but providedinvaluable networking opportunities in the capital. Their story is great testament to our successful students from the Faculty and also totheir tutor, Edwina Goodwin, who started the Enterprise Society at DMU.

She commented: “This (placement) allowed me to applythe knowledge I have acquired at DMU about economics intoreal world situations, whilst receiving the support from mymanagers and all the other teams I worked with, and I cantruly say it has been an amazing year living in London. Irecommend everyone to do a placement because I learnedso much from it, built up many contacts and had the pleasureto meet/work with other students on placement. The bestpart about doing my placement was that I got to visit Number11 Downing Street and met with The Chancellor of theExchequer, George Osborne.”
