The Beginning of the Church

• After his ascension, the disciples of Jesus awaited the Spirit.

• On Pentecost the Holy Spirit came to them, and they went out and began to preach.

• The Church was made know to the world on Pentecost; this was the birth of the Church.

The Marks of the Church – visible signs that make the Church what it is.

• We express these marks in the Nicene Creed

• The Church is: – One– Holy– Catholic and – Apostolic

The Church is ONE

The Church is One because all true members are one in faith, one in sacraments, one in sacrifice and are united under one visible head.

(2 Peter 1:1)

The Church is HOLY

The Church is Holy because its founder and head is holy. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to teach and strengthen us in holiness. The Church invites all humankind to a holy life.

(John 6:69)

The Church is CATHOLIC

The Church is Catholic (universal) because it exists in all ages, teaches all nations, and has the source of all truth.

(Mt. 28:16-20)

The Church is APOSTOLIC

The Church is Apostolic because it rises on the foundation of the Apostles, with Jesus as the head. The Church is meant to continue the mission of Jesus in the world.
