In Timber Sun Melbourne painter Emily Ferretti continues to explore the painterly qualities of her everyday surroundings. This latest body of work - and her sixth solo exhibition at Sophie Gannon Gallery - includes still life, landscape and abstract oil paintings and pencil drawings on wood, showing her interest in materiality and experimentation.

During her Australia Council studio residency in New York City last year, Ferretti researched early 20th century American folk art. She was specifically interested in ‘memory painting’ from that era and you can see references to this genre in her latest exhibition. Layers in the images create the feeling of different states such as inside and outside, in front or behind, challenging the viewer to explore the shifting composition as the figurative elements entangle with the abstract and back again.
