SWEDISH FUNDERS
MMW AIGrants related to consequences of autonomous systems and AI
The Wallenberg foundations (KAW) has made significantinvestments in research on autonomous systems and AI throughthe program WASP. There is no doubt these technologies will havesignificant effects on our society and the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation think it is essential to support research in social science and humanities that can give insights how to tackleconsequences of upcoming technology shifts.
The foundation intend to support 5-10 projects during 2019.
The call refers to applications in the following areas:• Ethics and autonomous systems and AI• Economy of autonomous systems and AI• Law for autonomous systems and AI• Social consequences, including effects on the labor market of
autonomous systems/AI
Improved information systems for autonomous systems and AIGrantholders must be willing to participate in organized workshops and graduate schools within the WASP-program.

WHY NOW
• Urgency: The problem will get out of hand if not addressed right now.
• Urgency: There is a window of opportunity to solve the problem, but it will soon close.
• Timeliness: Someone have just made a key discovery that paves the way for solving the problem.
• Timeliness: Someone just developed methodology that allows the problem to be attacked in new ways.
WHY YOU
• You are the one that made the key discovery or developed the new methodology.
• You have exciting preliminary data, indicating that you are on the right way to solving the problem.
• You have access to a unique research material.
• You have access to a specific infrastructure required for addressing the problem.
• You have formed a strategic alliance with unique collective competence to address the problem.
SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACTSPHERES OF RELEVANCE AND SIGNIFICANCE
INTERNAL

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACTIN RESEARCH PROPOSALS
RESEARCH- OR SCIENTIFICALLY INTERNAL SIGNIFICANCE
• The gap of knowledge– What is it?– Why bother?– Who cares?
What do you want to achieve?
How may this research generateimpact on your field (or on furtherresearch in general)?
What is the reach of your internalsignificance?
New horizons for science and research?
SOCIETAL IMPACT, RELEVANCE OR SIGNIFICANCE• The gap of knowledge
– Externally defined?– Why bother?– Who want this to get funded, and why?
Stakeholders at different levels? How could your results reach its full
potential? What is the time frame of your primary
impact? What might be the secondary impact?
What are the barriers/obstacles? The framework conditions (regulations,
standards…)?
