the phone rang.

All the previous sentences are in the PAST CONTINUOUS.

We use it to talk about an action or event that was happening around a particular time in the past.

We often use the PAST CONTINUOUS and the SIMPLE PAST together.

In this way, the PAST CONTINUOUS is used to say that a person was in the middle of a progressive action in a

certain time in the past.
