Keeping BONENT Members Informed
Fall 2013
Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology
The fourth seminar in the series of BONENT Regional Continuing Education Seminars was held in Newark NJ on August 20, 2013. As it was with the first three, this was an event not to be missed. An excellent location, excellent speakers, excellent opportunity to network and
make new professional colleagues – making a great combination for attendees – BONENT members and non-members. And attendees were happy to receive 7.5 CEs all in one day!
A Great Lineup of SpeakersNationally known speakers that have presented at the national conferences of NANT, ANNA, NKF and the Annual Dialysis Conference, were on hand to provide presentations to the attendees.
3Kazim Naqvi CHT, spoke on “What’s in the Water Room,” with attendees learning the function of three components of the
water treatment system and the consequences of an inadequately maintained dialysis system.
3Lynda Ball CHN, gave a two-part presentation on “Access Management: the Art of Making Vascular Accesses Last,” teaching those present at least two changes in practice
that will decrease infiltrations and much more.
3Dori Schatell MS, presented “Ways to Address Depression and Adjustment Disorder in Dialysis.” Attendees learned to compare and contrast
depression and adjustment disorder and three causes of stress for patients new to dialysis.
3Diana Shelkov CHT, gave two presentations. “What’s Wrong with This Picture” taught attendees to identify medical errors in the dialysis unit. Her second
presentation, “Dealing with the Difficult Patient,” gave insight into recognizing difficult behaviors in the dialysis unit.
3Donna Syracruse RN, spoke on “ Innovative Vascular Access Options” and gave an in-depth review of the HeRo access system.
A Big BONENT Thank You:So much goes into a successful event. BONENT would like to thank:
Cyrolife for their continued support and for providing a speaker for the last three seminars;
Lynda Ball RN, CNN, ANNA National Treasurer and FMS National Access Manager, for presenting at three of our first four regional seminars;
Diana Shelkov CHT, for her exciting presentation at three of the first four seminars;
Dori Schatell MS, Executive Director of Medical Research Institute, the organization responsible Kidney School, Life Options, Home Dialysis Central and the Core Curriculum for Dialysis Technicians, for speaking at our past two seminars.
And especially to all of the attendees who helped us get our new BONENT Continuing Education Program off the ground in our first year.
Get Ready for More BONENT Regional Seminars in 2014 Dates and locations will be announced soon. Watch the BONENT website for updates.

Get InvolvedIn our Seminars, History & Exam Question WritingOur Best Seminar to Date!Even though I was unable to attend after having ankle surgery, it sounds like the Northeast Regional Seminar in Newark on August 18th was the best one so far (see page1)! The BONENT Vice President, Carol Johnson, Continuing Education Program Director, Lyle Smith and his CE committee (John Larsen, Connie Mears, Karie Records and Sonya Wynne) and Executive Director Peter Anas and his staff, did a wonderful job of making this event happen.
There was great attendance, great speakers and a great opportunity to network with other dialysis professionals and expand your horizons. I would also like to thank local BONENT members who distributed flyers throughout the New York City metro area, who helped at the registration desk and even stepped up to be speakers. They are Karen Evans, Kazim Naqvi, Armani Rashad, Diana Shelkov and Philip Varughese.
Watch for More Seminars in 2014Following the great success of these events, BONENT is planning at least three Regional Education Seminars for 2014. The Board has not yet decided the dates and locations of these Seminars. We plan to set dates and locations in the next few months. The Continuing Education committee is always looking for new topics and speakers. Watch the BONENT website for updates.
If you have not been able to attend a BONENT Regional Education Seminar, they are the best 1-day seminars on what’s new in dialysis that you will find anywhere. If you have attended, I don’t need to tell you how good they are! So, watch the website and save the date for at least one of the 2014 BONENT Regional Education Seminars.
Preparing for our 40th AnniversaryAs you probably know, 2014 is the 40th Anniversary of BONENT. That’s right, BONENT is the best and oldest organization certifying dialysis nurses and technicians in the world.
Help Us Document Our HistoryThe organization was founded in 1974 by a group of the early pioneers in dialysis. We plan to put a little about the history of BONENT and honor the people that took the time to make this organization happen, on the website and in the newsletter during our anniversary year of 2014.
Anyone who has information about the founding of BONENT (interesting anecdotes, photos, key dates, etc.), please send them along to the Executive Office at peter@bonent.org.
Tell Your Co-Workers: Two New Exams Coming - Spanish CHT and BIO-Med
We should have 2 new exams ready for 2014. The CHT in Spanish is nearing completion. The long-awaited BIO-Med Exam will be ready later in 2014. Thank you to Dennis Schell and his committee who have been working hard and making great progress on this exam.
In the next few months, the committee will need help writing exam questions. If you have time and are willing, contact Dennis at schellfamily5@sbcglobal.net.
