1.B.2 HPP/HRM Provide advice and assistance to community agencies developing
physical activity programs
What does success look like?-Consultations captured info on how to access and better serve our
stakeholders. Consistent messaging created and shared with stakeholders. Tools (i.e. websites, dissemination strategy)
- Stakeholders within the HRM are supported, engaged and educated strategy messaging.
Where are we now?-HRM, HW, and HRSB discuss collaboration of our websites and build a
stakeholder list. This includes development of a dissemination strategy to help ensure effective communication with our targets. A stakeholders gathering to capture necessary information is planned
for the Fall of 2011.
Where do we want to go in the next year?Stakeholder gathering held and communication systems are in
place.

*1B. To expand the skills and commitment
of leaders in health, sport, recreation and education to support
people to become more active

1.B.4 HPP Sponsor and annual forum to build capacity and introduce best
practices among physical activity practitioners and other professional that can support physical activity initiatives.
What does success look like?-forum held and attendees were diverse. Info shared on best
practices. Captured ways to support stakeholders needs related to providing effective physical activity opportunities. The forum is based on the current needs of our stakeholders as well as the
changing environment..
Where are we now?-The forum was held successfully last year, the focus was on
increasing the physical activity levels of girls and women in HRM.-currently we are gathering and organizing our list of stakeholders
and making key contacts within our targeted communities.
Where do we want to go in the next year?-A topic will be decided upon in the summer of 2011
-the forum has been held in the Fall of 2011

1.B.8 HSFNSEngage elected officials to implement policy and allocate resources to support physical activity in the Halifax region
What does success look like?-More programs and policies in place that provide the
opportunity and ease for people to be more active, more often.-Measures of success of this is hard over an annual basis as policy development and comprehensive programs cannot be done within a calendar year but as ones that are ongoing and
evolutionary.Where are we now?
-Significant progress in working to implement some of the policies in place with work on the Regional Planning Advisory Committee for HRM and engagement of other key NGOs on active transportation and healthy communities advocacy.
-Done great work on expanding our walking programs into the school system, Walkabout @ Work and our community leaders.
Where do we want to go in the next year?The main objective is to continue to build on policy work to
ensure HRM is a walkable, active community for generations to come.

Where are we now?-work in partnership and expand our partners to include our target
groups – more youth and senior partners.-Seasonal/Annual initiatives: TTROW, Girls Soar, Boys Week, etc-HRSB grants focus on sustainability within school, rather than
“one off”-We have a wide of variety of programs and focused support in
certain schoolsWhere do we want to go in the next year?-List of stakeholders, policies, programs, that are informal and
develop dissemination strategy-engage stakeholders and increase participation by schools and
students-build sustainability and gather data

What does success look like?A comprehensive, sustainable program which results in improved
health outcomes including decreased screentime, increased healthy eating and increased PA in HRM and beyond (program may be
implemented in unique ways in different communities).
Where are we now?Report outlining relationship b/w screen time, PA, dietary intake and
healthy wts in children.-Workgroup was formed and linked with PA coordinators leading Live
and Unplugged -SK developed posters and presentation , IWK newsletter,

What does success look like?- Schools used by both school groups and community organizations
and increase of PA before and after school hours. Increase in student participation. Sustainable programming

- Many schools used by other organizations for extracurricular opportunities. Addressed concerns about different organizations

3.B.4 HRM Pilot street closures for individual and family recreation use
What does success look like?-Established process and funding for HRM Bike Week – Street
Closure.-Summary report on Identified barriers, impact and possible
solutions-Increase : numbers of street closures for pa purposes and citizen
participation.-Increase organizations satisfaction
Where are we now?-Street closure was done this year during HRM Bike Week.
-Partnership between HRM, Bicycles Plus Club, and Halifax Cycling Coalition.
-Process helped identify the challenges and current opportunities that exist.
Where do we want to go in the next year?- Assist in the HRM Bike Week Open Street Party to better
understand the process of street closures -Adopt and promote a procedure or a program that supports
organization/groups in closing streets for recreational purposes.-Collaborate with new stakeholders and develop

3.B.5 HSFNS Promote and increase the number of walking initiatives across the Halifax Region
What does success look like?-long term goal is to increase the number of residents who walk
30 to 60 minutes, most days of the week.-more supports for communities to improve their "walk-ability".
Where do we want to go in the next year?-Pilot project aimed at grade 7 girls, 10 schools in the HRM. Extracurricular resource modified with school feedback. Pilot
project with patients to be launched in the spring-usability testing of our website underway and will inform new
and improved site

-HRM recreation survey that has been conducted and will be able to provide valuable information.
